I was out mowing with my 1950 Cub (6 volt with negative ground) yesterday. After lunch I went back out to start it up again an all I got was a starter solenoid clicking noise. Put in a new battery but still just got the solenoid clicking noise. When I took a closer look at my solenoid I noticed that it looks like the picture of a 12 volt solenoid that I found in a catalog. I couldn't find a picture of a 6 volt soleniod to compare. So I guess I have two questions. 1. Would a 12 volt starter soleniod work in a 6 volt system? and 2. Can I safely jump the starter directly to the battery (bypassing the solenoid) to check the starter?

Cubs that were 6 volt from the factory did not use solenoids, just a pull-rod switch. The Cub in original configuration used the battery box as part of the grounding path. If the bottom of the box has gotten corroded, it may greatly hinder the operation of the electrical system.

I think this Cub has been tinkered with over the years. The pull rod switch has been replaced with a push button starter switch, and a starter soleniod that appears to be bolted on at a convenient location. Its not pretty or all original, but I'm keeping it working and having fun with it.

Well I rapped the starter with a hammer and, I"ll be darned, it started! Must be the brushes. Guess I"ll have to get that starter rebuilt. I"ll recheck the cable connections too.

Thanks a lot.

They can look identical. Put a volt meter on the contact leading into the starter from the solenoid. if there is voltage at this location with the button pushed, it may be an open starter, Worn brushes or broken internal lead. Rap on the end of the starter away from the block with a small hammer if it then starts, it is the brushes 99.99% of the time. Rap just hard enough to get its attention, you are not trying to dammage it. JimN
