Ive got a good one for you to ponder over! Last week, my brother in law rebuilt the head on his 806 gas,,,, (C-301) got it running good and went baling hay with it,,, bout an hour went by and it started acting up,, then, started to hear the classic exhaust valve whistle they make,,,, So, a few hours of cussin, swearin, etc etc, we tore the head back off. We found a piece of rust lodged in the valve holding it open. We was like where in the world did that come from!???!! So, we looked and looked, and finally found out where it came from,,, and unfortunatly,, lots more hiding. You know where the intake bolts to the exhaust manifold, with the heat flapper in there,,, well, that intake casting is hollow all the way around the intake flange where the carb bolts on, so exhaust gasses can flow and heat the intake,,,, anyways that area was so caked and packed full of rust its amazing that it ran at all without spitting rust out the exhaust!!! What happened was a large piece of rust shook loose and I imagine that when it shut down, or fired up it stirred it up inside and spread that stuff all thru the exhaust manifold. Years back, dad had a 403 combine that had the 263 in it, I can remember it ran great when we parked it, but when fired up in the fall to harvest, it would run good for about 30 mins or so and POP!! bye bye valves,,,, so, the other day, I took the intake off that engine, and cut the casting apart in this area,,, never,,, have I seen so much rust in my life!!! And was in direct flow of the exhaust. I just thought id share that with you,,,,, lots of IH 6 bangers out there that mysteriously burn valves for no reason,,,, especially after they sit for a while,,,, ChadS
