Gentlemen (and or ladies),

The old H finally blew a head gasket. We've got it all stripped down and ready to reassemble. I know the bolts are torqued to 110 lbs/ft. My question is, is there a special order that they need to be torqued in? Any help will be appreciated.

Bob

I'll have to double check the manual and make sure I didn't read it wrong...lol. All for naught anyway as it turns out. This morning when I started to put everything back together I noticed a fine crack in the sleeve of the number 2 cylinder so now it's in for a complete rebuild and that's a project for another day.

H head bolts are supposed to be torqued to 70ft/lbs. The M head is torqued to 110ft/lbs.

Start in the center and work in both directions arriving at the front and rear of the head at the same time.

Don't forget to retorque the head after you have run the engine and had it up to operating temp. for about 30 minutes.

Very good sir. Thank you. That was the common sense approach but the manual didn't mention anything about it so I thought I better check!

When I torque down heads I like to do it in three steps. Oil the threads and start out with the bolts a little more than finger tight, then in this case I would torque them to 35 ft lbs in sequence, then to 70 in the same sequence, then to 110 in the same sequence. Then run back over them at 110. Once you've had it up to temp and under a load, wait until it's cool enough to work on but not totally cold, and in the same sequence, crack each bolt loose and take it right back to 110 one at a time. Run back over them without cracking them loose and you're done. I've done this on countless engines and have always had good results.
