I just completed a complete end to end restoration of the Steering gear for my SMTA. Here are some lessons learned. 1. If you have a narrow front, won't have a loader, get rid of the power steering. Have the Charlyn off and hope to EBAY it for about 500 dollars. If yours is under the hood, leave it, but mine was out front and too ugly. 2.If you remove the power steering you will need a new shaft. Don't bother looking for used. Local machinist made up a new one, new threads and slot for key for 40 dollars. The new repro Steering wheels are a bit wider so the portion that is turned down to 3/4 inches can be made longer so the nut can bottom out. 3. Two options on that ujoint. Mine was toast. Got the one off ebay for 45 dollars. Then found out local IH store had the spider available for the old joint for 15 dollars.P/N 150635R92 4. Check the front shaft bearing in the bolster. Mine was castrated (missing balls), new one at IH p/n A31260 is 11 bucks. 5 Shaft that has gear on the end had lot of wobble in the yoke. Just built it up with JB Weld and filed it to fit. Snug now. We'll see how it wears. But at about 20 rpm and very few of those it ought to hold up years. 6. Front upper bronze bushing is available at IH. 7. New repro steering wheel to top it off and it's 100% new again. Total cost about 160.00,not including primer and paint. 2 hours labor. See that Mikey! The tip of the iceberg.
