I need help ! My dad's ole 706 shifter is so wore out I am afraid to let anyone else use it.
You never know if it is in reverse, park or whatever. The Park lock also does not hold right. I get buy with it with a lot of cussing if you know what I mean. Just light chores anymore, although I do depend on this tractor. I know you can get a rebuilt trans. cover but not sure how hard it is to replace. Any ideas would be appreciated

Did you ever think of adjusting it! I have an 806 and they need adjusted every once and a while. Even park. A manual and an adjustment is cheaper than a rebuild?

I have fixed a bunch of them and it is not a hard fix . First off remove the cowel and start there and look for any woren parts or loose parts then pemove the kick panel and take a look in there and see what has slop replace the headed pins with OEM pins as it is ral hard to find off the shelf pins that are just the wright lenght . If ya have a bunch of slop in the shift lever there is a bushing that is replaceable on it now maybe the dash support is wore and the factoy bushing will not help much so here ya have a machine shop make ya a bushing that wiil offset the ware. Next you pull the floor plate and get to the range transmission cover here it helps to have and extra pair of hand . You also have to remove the side plate on the left side or the transmisson housing as this is where the reverse shift fork is and ya want to catch the pices and parts that are going to fall out as you come up with the cover . When that is off ya look for broken rollers broken springs woren shifter cam and woren Detent plate now as for the cover the main whole may be woren but here again a local machine shop can bore and make a new bushing and along with a new shift lever al will be well But unless they have done this before keeping the org. center line of the shifter hole is a must . Also while ya got the cover off now is the time to install the new updated spring loaded park lock That way when ya drop her in park she is parked. If ya have any problems with this just yell.

First off, thanks for the info. Several of questions, you mention taking of the side plate to catch any parts that fall through. What can I be expecting to fall down?

Second, I think I remember seeing replacement or rebuilt transmission covers, So I guess those wear. Is is common to have to replace the top and how expensive is it?

I have never been inside one but you mention rollers, etc. How hard is it to get all of that re installed once I replace whatever is worn. Sounds like it could be a bugger to get all lined up.

Thanks, Gene

The plate on the side is where the rev. shift fork is and when you pull the top cover off the shift rod comes with the cover and the shift fork will fall over and the littel woodworf key will more then likely fall out of the shaft so those are the things that ya want to catch. It would be a real good idea to get a I T manual so you can read and look . Yes the covers do ware and i have never bought a cover yet i have then bored out and a bushing pressed i in the shifter hole and the rev. shifter done at the same time but hey i am cheap . Parts that you will need are probabley some rollers a spring a shifter shaft couple woodworf keys a roll pin maybe a couple as i call them cub cadet tierod ends for the shift linkage up on top a couple headed pins maybe a shifter cam and maybe a bushing . Since i can not look for myself to see what all you do need also a spring loaded park loc as like i said before now is the time.
