My 1940 M gives one loud backfire -pop- when i shut her down, Throttling all the way down before i turn it off seems to help. I changed points and condensor last thing before this problem started. I believe I got gap correct.
Also, it might be me but she sounds like she is running louder, too.

Any ideas? Thanks.

your fuel adj. could also be set to rich, which may not have showed prior to your tune up, as it may have needed it then!

I'd say you have it timed just a tad faster than it was before you changed the points making it run hotter. Probably not a problem.

Once you shut off the ignition the points really don't matter. Run the tractor at a fast idle a minute before you shut it down to cool the cyliners especally if it's been working hard.

That kind of backfire is often caused by a chunk of hot carbon buildup setting off the gas/air mix in one of the cylinders. The cure for getting rid of carbon is to work the snot out of it :)

As for it sounding louder, those backfires can do damage to your muffler. I"d bet that it blew the baffle out of your muffler.

When you shut one down the fuel is still being sucked into the engine and if theres hot spots like carbon build up it will backfire and sound like a shhotgun going off. One thing you can do is work it hard for a few hours, or do a water mist in to the intake of the carb to clean up the cylinders. Or turn off the gas and when it dies turn off the switch

Oh, I forgot about SeaFoam. You can get it at most big-chain auto parts stores. Get yourself an empty spray bottle like a Windex bottle or something, pour about 1/3 of the can of SeaFoam into it, then slowly spray that into the vacuum plug hole on the side of the manifold on a nicely warmed-up engine per the instructions. She'll smoke like crazy, but the SeaFoam will loosen up all that crud.
