I have a Behlen power steering unit on my 450 that steers great to the right, but hard to the left. Are there any adjustments to be made, or should I just rebuild the unit? Who has parts?
Secondly, the external and fast hitch valve stack is dripping oil from one of the bottom cover plates. Does anyone other than CaseIH offer kits or gaskets for these valves?

In my 400s I. T. manual it said to mark the mating teeth on the gears so that you could reinstall them properly. I missed that part and believe me, that was a big mistake. My IHC dealer got the replacement seals and shims for me. I placed the name and the address for a two man repair shop in the archives that will do repair work for the Behlen Corperation if you need them. They charge $55.00 to retime the gears if you don't get them back together right.

The 400 parts book has an exploded view of the Behlen. The valve area is in the narrow part and that seems to be your problem. Old springs are always troublesome and there are a couple in there. It looks like a cam raises a spring loaded ball and lets oil flow into the gearmotor. I think all you will need is a couple of the mylar gasket for the body and a couple of shaft seals in addition to springs and balls. The parts probably come in kit form and are cheap. IH probably doesn't see it the same way, however. You might consider sourcing the springs and balls from the hardware store, making your own gaskets, and going to an autoparts store for shaft seals.

When I was shopping for a Behlen at a salvage yard many years ago, I noticed several on the shelf did not turn freely in one direction. I got a good one but called up Behlen for some gaskets in case I needed to take it apart. I think they slipped them in an envelope and sent them along gratis. They are very thin. Prolly not more than .001". Certainly thinner than paper.

You shouldn't hesitate to fix it yourself. It looks easy and I can't see that special tools would be involved.

Loosen the steering shaft couplings on both ends of the power steering unit. Start the tractor and turn the steering wheel as far as it will go in both directions several times. Stop with the front wheels straight ahead. Shut off tractor and tighten the couplings. That may help with the problem. CaseIH dealer should be able to get gaskets. If not I know one that will.
