Cleaning out the cooling system

I took the radiator off the Super A and although it was still working it was rather rusted in places. I decided to just go ahead and get a new radiator. When I took the old radiator off I noticed a lot of gunk in the bottom water return line so now I am wondering if there is some way to clean out the water system of the engine.

I can see some rust in the inlet water line at the top so I know there must be more rust. I have read where people use muratic acid to clean the radiator but I think thats when they are off the engine. I just need something to put in there to clean it out before I put the new radiator back on. Something that will clean the rust out but not do any harm.

Any suggestions?

Before you put the radiator back on blow with air and water the lower part of the block to get the four holes clean that let the water down by the sleeves. I would take off the lower housing so you can get to the lower block better. Then stuff a rag along with the hose and run the water back thru the bottom. I would do this before putting back togetherand using the vinegar.

Starting the tractor and letting it run is kind of out of the question, I have it torn down to much for that now.

It ran good before I started the restoration so I dont plan on tearing into the motor or going any further than I have too. Im not a mechanic so that kind of scares me to start working on the actual motor.

Plans as they are now is to run some water thru the block and then plug the bottom hole and put vinagar in there and let it sit. Then I will run water back thru it to flush it again.

Thanks Gene and Old. This Super A was my fathers he bought in 1949 (1948 model) and so kind of special to me.

Put the old radiator back on then fill the system with vinagar. Then run it for an hour or two. Then if it has a block drain make a hook up so you can flush it out with a garden hose. I've had good lukc doing that on a number of tractors that would over heat but they all run just fine now and don't overheat any more
