Hi Good people, Can any one give me some idea's on how to make some gasket making tools? I have probably spent close too $200.00 on gaskets this year for Mags. And I have also spent probably $15.00 this year on gasket material to make my own by tracing them out and cutting them with a good pair of small craft shears. That works the best. I cant seem to follow the lines very well trying to use a razor blade and goof and ruin a good gasket material. It is just hard on my hands and a pain to do because it takes so long. And most of the time I end up redoing them because they are a little to small to fit. So My question is can any one come up with some plans for me to maybe make a set for the H4 mag and the J4 mag with my lathe and drill press. I have the small punch type to make the holes that I got from harbor freight. I can give you dimentions if you would like, But the main thing would be to send me in the right direction on how to maybe do this. I have a hard time latly figuring out how to do and make things but if someone can show me how I may be able to do this I am sure I can get er done. Also I should have an update on the H motor shortly in the next few days or so I hope. So far besides a blown head gasket the machine shop is finding nothing wrong but he wants to plastic gauge the crank and test the oil pump in the next few days. JON

An Idea that might be the ticket is to have a sign lettering company use their vinyl cutter system to make a bunch. It is worth a try on those pretty thin gaskets. Give em a call, JimN

Magneto gasket sets are cheap.. Less than 10/set for the H4 & J4... My time is worth a heck of alot more than that..

Now that the rad is off blow out the lower area good. There is four holes about the size of a nickle that lets the coolant down by the sleeves so using compressed air and some water you shopuld be able to clean that area out. I have seen these holes plugged. Using a MAG lite or something good you can see these holes with the lower housing off. Sometimes a piece of heavy wire will help. Back flushing also. Then let the hose run in the top and you can see the water coming down thru the holes. The vinegar would be good when it is all back together as it will get some more loose.

I use a surgical tool for the inside cuts work well as you have the punches for the holes.

Cut a groove in a piece of plywood that matches the inside, and outside of the gasket. Put a 1/2"
or bigger bandsaw blade in the groove. Cement the teeth in the groove. Use your drill press to push the plywood through the gasket paper, with a rubber mat under the paper

yes I would be very interested . Unless he gets high pay cause I can buy them for about $4.00 a set but the quality is not that good. There are4 gaskets in the H4 and 5 in the J4 I think. JON

for gaskets I just trace the old gasket if theres enugh to do so thenfree hand them for the bolt holes just use a paper punch over the waste basket so as not to clean up a mess if there not perfet where it can be big or small some oh well for the biger bolt holes like for a 5/16and up a carrige head bolt will do just fine to cut nice neat holes put the gasket in place then with the head of the bolt on the gasket wher e the blot hole needs to go juat tap the stem of the bolt setting on the hole foe the blot or you could drill the rihgt size in a steel plate then use that for a die.

Hi Magman....I neeed to make gaskets also, usually two different ones, but I use dozens of them. So what I've done is to first make a template out of 1/4" plywood that is the exact the outer shape of the gasket. I don't drill any holes in this tmplate, I just use it to guide my sissors as I cut out each gasket. Next I've made a hardwood jig that the sissor cut gaskets can fit into. Picture a sandwich with the gaskets in the center. On the top piece of the hardwood jig I've drilled the holes that the gasket requires. I put about 20 gaskets in the jig, clamp it together and then put the jig in the drillpress and drill all 20 gaskets at once. The top and bottom gaskets usually get ruined by the drilling, but all the rest come out great and are all the same size, with the holes in the exactly the right spot. Takes awhile to make the template and jig, but saves time overall if you are making the same gaskets over and over in quanity.
Pete

I purchased a smale hole set, some small straight surgical scissors and some curved scissors. I have chart pack knives and utility knives. I have a piece of stainless steel that is shaped like a tear drop that I use to cut against in tricky cut outs.
