Hi. I lurk here more than I should. But lurking helps me appreciate the advice you all offer. I have a situation with a 706 I save from scrap. I removed the cab, cleaned the entire tractor, painted it,fixed cab windows, and put everything back together. Made it almost like new, 90% tires, wide front, etc. and realized it has a healthy 301 in it (190# of compression in all 6 cyls) I want to make it a lasting tractor. I discovered the exhaust manifold gasket is bad. OK, take manifold off and discover gasket between intake and exhaust manifold at the heat riser is bad. The surface between the manifolds is badly heat corroded. My question is instead of a new intake manifold at $200+, If I were to file down the corrosion and place 2 gaskets between the manifolds, will it hold? Quite likely I will be selling the tractor and do not want the buyer to have trouble. Thanks...

Thanks for the replies. I know the right fix is new, second best is to have it milled properly. I was looking for opinions. I hate to spend money if there might be a no or low dollar fix. There is a good machinist I know. I'll see what he says.

I agree with Brownie, Milling is best for flatness and gasket performance. Indexing the operation off of the existing good surfaces will assure surface alignment at the cylinder head. If more than one gasket thickness is removed to clean it up, use a metal spacer (stainless) to preserve true mating of the parts. Good luck,JimN

See what a machine shop would charge to mill the manifold flat & see how much would have to be removed.
