Super A questions (newbie)

I did a search here first and then ordered (the recommended?) service manual for my tractor, but $21.95 seems kinda light for a service manual...is there another manual out there that I should be looking for? (I don't want to post the vendor out of concern for making them look bad in case I ordered the "wrong" one)

and....Can anybody point me in the right direction as to the best way to set the tractor up to plow nice hills for our garden? Three seasons now, and I've switched the implements around every which way (although I'm not even sure I'm using the right ones)

Any and all suggestions welcome!

Rick

PS...anybody in central NC that wants to do a "hands-on" demonstration is welcome to smoked baby backs to take home...the number of racks to be dependent on distance travelled :)

Here I go reading old IH manuals again - but sounds like you need a pair of what IH called "disk hillers" in the owner's manual for the McCormick model A-144 Cotton and Corn Cultivator for the Super-A. According to the manual, you remove the standards (front inner plow pair) next to the row, and clamp the disk hillers in their place. Those 13" disks should throw as much dirt (or as little) as you would want on the row. They also offered a "potato hiller attachment" which looks somewhat like a curved solid-steel mouldboard with no plowpoint. Might be some somewhere...

Rick, here is a website that has a Super A parts manual that you can look at and get the pages you might need, copy to your computer. Then resize them and print out....HTH

Index is Page 6

Yessir....that's what I'm aiming for.

Glad to see you are just up the road...and I've got a Ford 3000 that I'm going to be working on, so I'll be seeing soon.

Their are manny ways to hill/cultivate I am a beginer at it also, I have in the past used 3 point implements to row/cultivate with. Keep my ribs warm hehehe

Which manual did you order? It's hard to tell if you ordered the wrong one if you don't tell us which one you ordered....

Also, telling us the vendor won't reflect badly on them. The only way it would reflect badly is if they deliver a poor quality product, or no product at all. Since that hasn't happened yet, there's no way it could be a bad thing to mention the vendor.

The I&T manual costs about that much. If you're not mechanically inclined, it'll be pretty much useless to you because the I&T assumes you know the basics and can tell how things come apart by looking at them.

There actually isn't a service manual that goes into a step-by-step on how to take particular things apart and put them back together. Even the IH service manual is just a bunch of tables and assebmbly drawings.

Nat,
Since everyone here is recommending it also, I ordered the one from binderbook.com...I'm not familiar with the IT?

I live just west of Grensboro. I may be able to give you some suggestions. I grew up with super As and farmalls while on my grandparents tobacco farms. I still use them today on my farm.

Jim,
My great-grandfather,grandfather, and dad farmed just south of Reidsville (right on the Alamance/Caswell Co. line)...Dad just sold the farm this year (passing the tractors along to me)

Thanks for the offer to help (G'boro to S. Pines seems about a "6-rack" :))

Rick: Binder Books is your best source. Go for the original IH operator's manual. Actually I like the IT manual in conjunction with operator's manual.

On you gardenig quest, the problem with cultivating equipment today, is over the years there have been so many aftermarket upgrades of ground working tools, it will be quite hard to advise you without seeing exactly what you have. Do you have any scanned photos? Just to give you an example, I have two complete sets of rear and center mount cultivators. I don't think I've used any of the original IH ground working tools in the past 10 years. There are just so many improved tools on the market. Now, there is also a bit of junk.

I would reccomend Binder Books too. What I like is the old IH "Blue Ribbon Service Manual". I think the current service manual available at Case/IH dealers is a reprint of it. I've also seen original copies of it available on e-bay.

I&T manuals can be good too.

Where are you in NC. I go to Asheville a lot from Murphy. I bought from Binder Books. Got a Service manual and parts cataloge (real Farmall ones) and they show just about everything you need to know.

Henry,

I'm in Southern Pines...I haven't picked up the parts cat. but did get an "owner's manual" awhile back. Planning on doing the carb. etc. this winter, so the parts cat. will come in handy

Hey Ricky, hope you don"t find something like THIS in your carb, like I did in my "49 SA! LOL

I"m new at this too. The parts manual is an awesome resource.

That carb float looks like "after-market yankee ingenuity" to me. Wonder if it ever worked. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)
