Another TA Question

I know this has been addressed a number of times, but bear with me. I just bought a 1066 and I got the operator"s manual from Case and I"m confused. Does pushing the TA lever forward (toward the front of the tractor) engage the TA in high or does pulling it back "add" the torque; thus low? The Operator"s Manual mentions hesitating part way through and then pushing the lever forward, but I"ve read on here to engage it quickly. Thanks for the help.

Like Randy says, the hydraulic TA used on the 706 and bigger tractors does not have a planetary like the SMTA-686 sized tractors. Imagine a simple two-speed transmission. It has a top shaft and a bottom shaft. The engine turns the top shaft, and the bottom shaft is the output. One gear on the top shaft meshes with one gear on the bottom shaft to provide the direct drive ratio (lever ahead). The other gear on the top shaft meshes with the other gear on the bottom shaft to provide a reduction (lever back). When the lever is ahead, the MCV valve routes oil to a hydraulic clutch pack, which locks the direct drive gear to the top shaft. When the lever is pulled back, the clutch pack disengages, a mechanical one-way sprague clutch locks the low gear to the top shaft, and a hydraulic brake pack engages to keep the sprague clutch from overrunning, which would cause the tractor to freewheel downhill. So yes, power flows through the TA unit at all times. Always shift as fast as you can to avoid slipping the clutch pack. Some of the late 86 series and all of the 3088 series use an electric switch to power a solenoid which moves the shift valve to provide an instant shift.

on your 1066 you are using the torque weather it is forward or back. there is no planetary gear reduction you are either applying power to one gear or another.

All TAs operate with direct drive (as though the TA did not exist) when the lever is forward. When it is pulled back, the planetary gears in the TA are clutched in, causing the power to flow through the gears. The TA must connect to the tractor housing to absorb torque from the gears. This connectin is through a one way clutch (sprague) that has ramps and rollers allowing the free wheeling action when engaged, but driving when the gear system catches up at reduced output RPM. Larger IH units use a hydraulic control system to assist the operator in engaging heavy clutches.

I believe (but might stand correcting) that even the large IH tractors need the lever moved deliberately through from TA to direct, and the same from direct to TA. JimN

Thanks janicholson, that is what I was looking for. I was confused as to whether the gear reduction happened when the lever was "pushed forward" or pulled back. I have been running my tractor now for a week, just picked it up at an auction, with the TA engaged. Just been using the bucket to lift stuff up while erecting a pole barn so no big deal, but will move the lever forward until I start doing some heavy pulling and field work.
