I"m currently looking at 2 Vibrashank 45 units. 1 is an 18 footer that was rode hard and put away wet (bad paint, 50% shovels need replaced, no hydraulic cylinder, bad tires). The cheapest I could get it is $500. The second unit is a much nicer 26 footer that I can get for $800 (good paint, good tires, good shovels, etc.) Is this still too much?

How much tractor will I need to pull a 26 footer? I currently have a non-turbo 806 diesal. Will I need to pick up a larger tractor (e.g., 1466) to pull a 26 footer?

Thanks everyone for the reality check. I guess I'll have to pass on the 26 footer and keep my eye out for a better 18 footer unless I can get a better deal on that old tired unit. I really do appreciate the knowledge and experience of those on the YT boards.

I think it would be cool if we could have a page on YT that lists the board's recommendations about hp of tractor and size of implement. I think it would help newbies like me buy the right equipment for their tractor.

I also think it would be good if we had a list of recommended implements (brand/model) and also a list of non-recommended implements (brand/model). I think this would help folks make smarter buying decisions.

Most of my stuff is red, but I'm not opposed to some other brand if the price is right and it will do as good or better job.

I would think you should ask a neighbor as he knows more about your soil type than people hundreds of miles away. Been thru NE IOWA and soil and terrain sure differ in just a few miles.

We pulled a 26 footer with a 1566, sometimes traction was a problem, dual 18.4s. Way too much cultivator for an 806. Like Hobbyfarmer suggests go ahead and buy it, remove the wings.

I have a 24 1/2 ft. vibrashank with 6 inch spacing (although at the present time every second one is in the shed because I made it into a crust buster, tried anyway). We pulled it well enough with a 1070 case when all 49 shanks were on it. This thing i've got is for sale for $200. It's in good condition (it has full hydraulic wing lift, no cables ), walking axles on the main frame. It would need new shovels and one hydraulic tee fitting to be field ready. They were plentiful here at one time, but now everybody has learned to farm with a lot of trash cover and no summerfallow so these babies are obsolete. I am located in SW Manitoba.

Micheal

That 806 will pull the 26 footer all day long, just don't put it in the ground. :)

Here is a thought, buy the 26 footer, and take off the wings until you upgrade to bigger tractors and equipment. The main base is still what 14-16 foot wide... the 806 will pull that nicely. If you don't upgrade the tractor you can always use the wings as spare parts..... .. Just a thought.

I think it is usually best to buy equipment to fit the tractor. You just about can't come out stepping up to a higher HP level unless you are upgrading your equipment across the board to match the size tractor you move up to.

Anything under $2000 for tillage equipment is just incidental money compared with a larger tractor and the associated fuel consumed doing lighter work.

Six weeks after you start working the 1466 and you have to replace the T/A it will be hard to remember it only cost you $300 to go to 26 ft.

I would probably buy both units and use the good one for spare parts. It's still only $1,300.

We have an 18' vibrashank 45 that we pull behind our 806 (it is cranked up to 105 horsepower but no turbo). If you sink the vibrashank all the way down, it sucks up a pretty good amount of the 806's power in 1st high without the TA. To me a 26 footer sounds a little big for an 806. It might work at a lot slower speeds and with the teeth not very deep, but it sounds pretty close, and I wouldn't think the 806 would have any horsepower to spare. It all depends on your soil type and what type of shovels it has on it. We have lots of blue clay by us so we try to keep the implements smaller than what the tractor is rated for.

I agree,

A 26 footer is "roughly" 50% wider so will probably demand another 50 ponies. :>)

Sure wish I knew where these guys are finding all this cheap machinery. Ya don't want to know what I had to give for mine. :>(

Mich,

They come with different shank spacings and duckfoot/bull-tongue configurations and like any tillage implement, they have to be planted firmly in the ground. Also, the tires have to be pretty well matched because they are what control the depth.

My 18 footer is 9" width on 6" centers and the implement is a nice load for a 100 hp tractor.

Worth? Guess it depends on your plans, but they are one heck of a machine.

well for another 300 bucks it sounds like the 26 footer is the better deal, i dont think the 806 is gonna pull it. but thats just my opinion.
