D358 in Combines- Which Ones

I've really come to like the D358 in my 826 and when I start shopping for combines, maybe I should look for one witht he same engine. Whatever combine I get, it will be old (because old is cheap, like all my other equipment), so I might as well get one with an engine I'm familiar with. Anyway, could I get a few hints on years and combine models that mounted the D358? More importantly, were those combines decent pieces. I don't like the engine enough to buy a substandard combine as part of the package! I see lots of red combines around here, but have never seen one with a D358. Your comments could help me stay away from a green combine, or head right for it. Many thanks!

Jim, big don is right. That 358 was in 1420's and some 1620's. There are not many 1620's around but those 1420's show up once in awhile. Never had one but they have a good reputation. Very dependable machine and will handle a 4 row corn head and 13ft platform in good shape. There were 3 sold new in this area. One guy still has his and gets along good, one guy just plain wore it out over alot of acres and traded it for a 1640 the third guy put a 6 row head on it and really pushed it hard and didnt have much trouble but traded for a 1660. All of the 1420's had electric over hyd. header control which would be good but you probably wont find one with a chopper. In this area they sell pretty reasonable because they are really just a 4 row combine. bill

The IH combines used the 358D in the 815,915 and
it may have been used in these combines too. The 1420, 1440, 1460, 1470 and the 1480. They used the D-436, DT-436, and the DT 466 in them too.

The 1420 and most of the 1620 combines used the D358. There were a few 1620's near the end of production that used the Cummins 5.9. All in all, for a small combine (4 row size) the 20's are an excellent unit. They offer the benefits of all the axial flow combines in a smaller package and work really well.

Jim

I don't think IH ever used that engine in a combine.

Isn't that the german deisel?

They used a 345 in the 815 and a 392 in the 915.

The 436 which is a good engine was used in 1440 and 1460 rotary combines.

I would look at a 1440 or 1460 as they can be bought cheap and still have a lot of life in them.

The 815 definitely came with the D358 diesel at some time during its production. When we were looking to convert the piston-slapping, gas-guzzling 756 to a diesel, we looked at several 815s. They all had the 358 Neuss-built (German) diesel.

The early 915's used the 407 which wasn't such a good engine the dealer tells me. The later 915's used the 414. The 414 eventually become the 436 and later the 466.

It"s not that the 414 became a 436, etc. All three of the 400 series engines (414, 436, 466) were used consecutively, it just depended on the application that determined which motor was used.

Hi Allan,
I thought some of the Galvanized cob crushers used the 426 Allis motor, no?
