All in-line four cylinder engines have the same firing order. I believe that also applies to V-4's and opposed fours. Don't know about X-4's. I think Henry Ford built some of those.

It has always amazed me that the foundries included the four cylinder firing order on their block castings. Every kid with an interest in engines knows about the four cylinder sequence.

I am just rephasing something I read decades ago. Seeing as I had never seen the alternate order, I believed it was true. But I will take you at your word. I stand corrected.

Two and three can never be consecutive. The same applies to one and four. I say "never" because it would add alot to the manufacturing costs of the crankshaft. It would also require five main bearings. Five main bearing cranks are the norm now but this wasn't the case a few years ago. Engines are now made to crank out more HP per cubic inch.

I am not really qualified to comment on this but I think there are harmonic balancing considerations when deviating from traditional firing orders. It would be interesting to look up the firing orders of engines that use gear driven balancers such as the Ford 172 cubic inch diesels.

I've seen more 4 cylinder engine with the 1-3-4-2
firing order. The Allis Chalmer CA used the 1-2-4-3 firing order which is the reverse of what IH used on their 4 cylinder tractors. Hal

Wardner,

You posted "All in-line four cylinder engines have the same firing order."

That's NOT true.

Both 1-3-4-2 and 1-2-4-3 are common 4-cylinder firing orders.

The difference is in how the cam lobes are set up.

if any doubt. It will be stamped on the engine above the distributor. #1 will be towards the front and #4 will be towards the seat.

The firing order is 1-3-4-2, but the cylinders are numbered 1-2-3-4 from the front of the engine to the back. (I just explained this to someone this afternoon.) ken
