Ok guys, due to a few internal issues, I'm gonna go into the engine on the H this winter. I bought it in 1989 with my highschool graduation money. I plan on splitting the tractor and rebuilding the engine. My dad and I redid the head in the early '90's. I'll go through it again. Now, should I go ahead and go through the whole tractor? I feel more than confident after the F12 and Regular plus many lawn mowers and 10-15 hit-n-miss and throttling govs. How far should I go...restoration or rebuild and what are the differences? What should I look for to replace? Which seals, etc? Thanks, Kevin

Kinda of hard for someone else to tell you how far to go. How much time and money do you have? When I restore a tractor I do the whole thing. It's a big job and the only way I can do it without getting overwhelmed is to treat each part as if it is the only project I have. I buy the parts book and start on page one with the cylinder head. I do one assembly group at a time and before you know it (2-3 yrs typically)I have a finished tractor. Its a great way to practice patience. In my younger years I would tear into ten things at once without the proper skills, experience or tools and wind up with unfinished (and broken) projects lying all over the garage and basement.

How's the transmission? If it's quiet and tight I'd leave it alone but otherwise you might want to replace some gears and bearings. I wouldn't mess with seals that aren't leaking unless it is something you have apart anyway.

Howdy Howard...got the rad. core...delivered and man seemed happy.

-Tranny sounds good...leaks some around the belt pulley shaft(which I use a good bit)...the rear pto doesnt seem to leak, nor do the axles. Has a lot of slop in the front end when in road gear...narrow front.

You will sue want to fix the front end. I was still able to get the bushing from Case IH for an M just a few years ago. Don't try to seal it to hold oil though. Just refill the box with gun grease.Likely the gears are worn too.
