Is a 706 a good all-around chore tractor? What's one worth that has a NF, 3pt, good paint, and 4200 hrs? Anything i should look out for? Thanks!

I just bought a 706 gas with a NF and in hind sight it was a dang good buy...glad I did. also in the family stable for chores are 2 300 U's, H, M and a SM. We also have a 706D but I would not recommend one for a chore tractor.

Unless you will be using a loader get a narrow front, I know I am the odd man out on that. Well, speaking of tractors I'll finish up my post later tonight.

I had a 706 ger. and a 656 gas. Seems either one would be a good chore tractor. I had engine heaters on all my tractors. Once the 706 was warmed up it would start right up on cold days.

Found out the 656 needed more work then the wife was willing to spend on it so it went to auction.

Opinions vary as we can from the replys but it really comes down to what kind of chorse you are doing. I've got a 340 NF gas that I run in the winter with a snow blower and run through the fields and woods during the summer. I only plant a couple acres of corn for the deer so the rest of the time is pretty much spent pulling a trailer around. That's plenty for me but if you got bigger chores get a bigger tractor.

Having driven a Farmall 656, JD 3020 and Ford 5000, I would (for a chore tractor) take the 5000 first and the 656 last. I dont like the 656 engine or tranny as much as the others. If you want a red tractor I'd go with the 706 just for the tranny. I thought the later 310 engine was better but I've never driven one. I know this is an IH forum and the Farmall would likely outpull the others but you asked about a chore tractor, the 706 is good, others might be a little better. My two cents.

Your needs and/or requirements must be a lot different than mine.

The little Fords just don't have enough hind quarters for this area. Especially, when the weather turns nasty and footing is an issue.

My 5000 has 16.9x38s and yes traction is the first thing it comes up short on. But for a chore tractor I think nimble. All three tractors reside on my farm and the Ford seems to get used the most but if I were plowing or disking I wouldn't pass the 656 by. I can imagine how much flack I'd take if I said the 3020 was best.

I know of a 656 gas that went round for round with 4-14 plow with 4020 with 4-16 plow. I ran that 656 and 4-14 many hours. and did many chores with it. The gut later got a 4010d for winter but it would always jell on him.

Yep the 656 handles 4-14s just fine (its a diesel, actually a 301 glow plug diesel out of a combine) I pull 5-18s with a 4020 but it has a turbo and needs a few hundred lbs on the front end and will overheat in 5th gear so I have to stick with 4th. Have a good day!

Matt,

Oh, it will work just fine although it is a large built tractor and not quite as "nimble" in the tight spots.

I'd sure be for losing that trike front end tho. Just cannot imagine wadin' thru the mud with one of those.

I'm with the other fellas; don't like to crank up the diesels during cold weather without a couple of hours of "heater" time.

Skip the 706, go for a 656. Better power to weight, lower rpm (better fuel economy), and pretty bullet-proof if you take care of the maintenance. My dad and I have been running one for 25+ years and love it. He had a 706 before that and swears he'll never go back.

Yep,

I didn't know how to put it in words. The small chassis outfits just work a whole bunch better around the farm yard. Not too big; not too small.

Although great tractors, the bigger outfits need a little "stretchin' space" to get out and really shine.

On top of that, those old 656s can do all the chore work and then still spend the whole day out in the field. Just about the perfect sized tractor to my mind.

Yes, but you didn't say if it's a gas or diesel. The gas is real good if you need something that will start in very cold weather, but is very hard on fuel if you do any field work with it. The old 282 glowplug diesel is a very good all-around engine if it's in good shape. If the compression is low or if the glowplug system is not in top shape it will be almost impossible to start on a 90 degree day. The fresh 282 in my 560 will start better than any other diesel we have on a cold day with about 30 seconds on the glowplugs. The 310 German diesel that the very last 706's had will be horrible for light work. Those were built to run fast, hot, and hard. Under light loads and low speeds they stink and slobber so bad you can't stand to be around them.

A lot depends in the chores your doing. A 75HP tractor is a little big to me for a chore tractor, but thats for what I do with a chore tractor. I have seen them sell for around $5000 but other then that I can't help much

My neighbor has a 706 and an 806. A friend of another guy has one as well. Decent enough tractor but both 706's had to be plugged in, in order to start. Even in the summer. The 806 started a little easier and the 706 had the engine rebuilt. Hope this helps. Dave
