Governor Question

Hey all.

I am replacing my throttle lever plate and handle and noticed that my speed change lever on my governor seems to be very sloppy in the housing. It has ~1/4" of end play in and out of the housing, and it rocks up and down quite a bit as well. I looked in the service manual and it shows nothing supporting this item besides two felt washers. How much play is allowable on this assembly without affecting the functionality of the governor.

Also where can I find repair parts for this as well.

BTW.... I purchased one of the .pdf format service manuals from Ebay. Is this the same as the Blue ribbon manual you see on there all the time???

Thanks,
Tim

Yes i rebush them with a 5/8x1x2 bronze bushing i find at LOWES. After you unbolt the housing and move it forward between the fan remove the spring loaded pin on the gov shaft as it will give you enough cleatence to remove the housing. Just did one yesterday. I fasten the housing on a fixture i made and use the milling machine with 5/8 cutter to rebore the hole. Enough of the seal remains and they dont seem to leak. You will have to trim the bushing a little for length when putting throttle shaft back. Little by little i am getting all 10 As ,BNs and Bs rebuilt sure makes nice throttle response.

Thanks for all the responses. I will remove and drill/ream to size. I believe that I have some bronze laying around somewhere.

How about that Blue Ribbon Service Manual? Is that what is typically found for sale on Ebay as a .pdf document. It doesn't say Blue ribbon service manual on it though. Is there any benefit in buying one over the SM that I have?

Thanks,
Tim

Any tricks or things that I have to watch out for in removing the governor housing? Does it just un bolt and pull straight off the back of the magneto?

Scotty has it right.

You can get stock sizes of brass & bronze bushings at an industrial supply like McMaster-Carr or a local machine shop. Also told that Lowes stocks them too.

It's not a hard job, but if you don't want to tackle it yourself, it would be an easy job for a machine shop to do for you.

A Case/IH dealer can get you most everything else in that governor, like springs, bearings etc.

You need to remove the govenor and drill and ream the housing and install a bushing to get the proper fit. Also while you have it apart you can install new thrust bearings.
