Hi, just brought home a 1950 WD-6 this weekend and noticed a leak coming from the rear seal. Will i have to split it and how much will the updated seal cost? What could be a possible cause of it starting to leak? Thanks Alot!!

For updated seal, are you refering to the neopream seal. If so the upper and lower housings seals go in have to be changed also if you have rope seal now. Your tractor may have update already because I have found several in MD, tractors. Think IH started installing in tractors sometime during 400 D tractor production in farmalls. Think the neopream seal is over a hundred bucks, ben a while since I checked around though.

Hi, just a suggestion, check the leak to make sure that it really is the rear main and not the front seal of the transmission. If it is the rear main the tractor will have to be split. The seal from Case NH is about $30? Been awhile since I bought it. Maybe get a manual to walk you through the project. (the flywheel won"t come out through the top) My S WD-6 has the frame rails, so the tractor is actually split. My W-6 had the bathtub frame and it was like pulling the motor in a car. Good luck have fun Geoff

Hmmmmm mmmmm,
I have a '49 W6. I didn't have to pull the engine to change the seal. Removed the flywheel and mounting plate from the rear of the engine, supported the rear of the engine with an overhead crane, changed the seal.

Hi Paul, I have a 48 W-6. I guess this would be the time to change the clutch. I'm fixing to do the same thing to mine.

Hi, I also have a 1950 WD-6. Here's what the manual says about that seal:

"Oil seals are provided at the front and rear of the crankshaft. The front seal is combination felt and leather, located in the crakcase front cover; assemble with the felt portion of the seal toward the outside. The rear oil seal is a split type felt; the flywheel must be removed to replace the seal. When an oil leak occurs between the flywheel and crankcase, check the fit of the expansion plug (2-1/8 inch) at the rear of camshaft; also check the rear main bearing for excessive wear, and replace all gaskets, and felt of the rear oil seal."

The book also says the "clutch is removable through top of frame after removing gas tank, etc., ..." Not sure whether you could get the flywheel off through the same opening or not.

Good luck.

Keith

I had an old welder with a Willys 4 cyl motor. It sat for years, and I decided to make it run again. The rear main leaks on it now, because it sat so long. I think the old rope seal got dry and rusted or stuck to the polished part of the crank. When I started it, I think it stuck to the crank and ruined the seal.
