I changed my first set of disk brakes on my Super H, thanks to all the great tips from the good folks on this forum, especially Bob M.

It was exactly as you described, luckily I didn't have any significant oil or grease leaks, and no broken seals. There was a fair amount of rust, but I took care of that with a wire brush and sand paper. Everything cleaned-up fine. I got my new disks from Steel Wheel Ranch at a quarter of what my Case/IH dealer was asking, so I think I did pretty good. I went from no brakes to being able to stop one wheel and pivot the tractor on a dime. My grin was worth the pinched fingers, dirty fingernails, minor cuts and stained coveralls (it was, afterall, my first time!) But I must admit that after working in a small cubicle in a downtown office all week, I sure do look forward to spending some quality time with the Farmall!

Hey Marc - thanks for the feedback, and glad it worked out for you!

Many people malign those IHC disk brakes. But if you maintain and keep 'em adjusted they work great! ...Bob M

Bob M...Once again, you've helped someone else on this site with disc brakes, as you did me earlier this fall. You're the man. I still have one question with mine (SM): What is the best procedure for adjusting the brakes? I find it difficult to "measure free travel" of the brake pedals, probably due to my inexperience. I've only driven the SM from shop to shed since doing mine, and I heard a loud knock every time I applied the brakes. My farmer friend said it's just because they're new. The next time I moved it around the shed, did not hear the sound. But I'm not sure they're really "adjusted" properly. Can you give me any tips for that, Bob? BTW, an early Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. David

David – That “snap” you hear when you first apply the brakes is pretty much normal. As your farmer friend suggests the snapping should diminish/disappear as the brakes wear in.

To adjust the pedal free play simply adjust the pull rod on the right pedal so the pedal moves freely about 1” before the brake disk makes contact. (You can feel when the disk makes contact when you move the pedal by hand). Then adjust the left pedal to match the right.

Thanks for the Thanksgiving greeting – and a very happy Thanksgiving also to you and your family! …Bob M
