Farmall 140-Fuel delivery problems

After years of running flawlessly my 140 is having some fuel delivery problems. I changed the fuel strainer and inline fuel filter. The strainer I replaced had a rolled brass screen in the top and I did not replace it with the new strainer. There is a separate fuel filter between the strainer and the carb. The tractor will stall after 10 minutes of idling on flat ground and when going up hills. Could it be the fuel filter I replaced or the lack of a brass screen inserted in the strainer? Is it possible that the fuel filter, bought at AutoZone, limits fuel flow?

Guys,
Problem solved. Thanks for help and information from the Forum members.

I removed the inline filter, strainer and fuel line. Before reinstalling the strainer I took a piece of brass screen and rolled it up like a cigarette and stuck it in the top of the strainer with about 1" exposed in the gas tank. Reinstalled the strainer, new fuel line and no inline fuel filter and everything worked like a charm this weekend. No stalls.

Thanks guys,
Jack

You should also check to make sure you don't have crud blocking the inlet to the fuel line inside the tank. It could restrict the flow enough to cause stalling. Here is my not highly recommended test. Remove the fuel line from the carb and blow into your fuel line until you hear bubbles in the tank. If the tractor runs fine after that, you can be sure that you had rust or other crud blocking the inlet, in which case you need to clean out your tank.

Be careful.

Had the same problem with a SC. Take the fuel line loose at the carb connetion. There should be a brass strainer inside the connection to catch anything that gets thru the bowl strainer. My SC was crammed full. Clean it out...You might as well take off the carb and give it a good once over as you may have some float issues as well. Once you take the carb apart (I assume a Zenith) and clean it out, blow it out with a good compressor nozzel. Worked for me. BobG in VA

have you checked for spark at plug wire when it dies? could be electrical. RP

I'm going to take the inline filter out this weekend and test. If that doesn't do the trick I'll look at the spark issue.

Thanks,
Jack

Would not say inline filter is realy needed but my M will run all day under load and not miss a lick and it has inline filter. Some inline filters will work with gravity flow and some will not. All you have to do to check filter is pull line off carburator and if you are getting good flow there filter or sediment bowl are not the problem. 140 only needs 2 or 3 gallon per hour flow under load.

I believe if you get rid of that Auto-Zone inline filter, your problems will be over. Well, at least your 140 fuel problems.

Jack: But you do need the screen in the sediment bowl. So many folks ignor the purpose of that sediment bowl, it is engineered for the tractor, and is the best system possible for that application. When the bowl is half full of crud and water, you can see it, and dump it out. Takes all of 5 minutes and will keep any Farmall out of fuel troubles.

That in-line fuel filter is the culprit. It is designed for use with a mechanical fuel pump, the 140 does not have a fuel pump. You do not need the in-line filter.
