I messed with my M last night even though it was 5* in my barn. It started right up buy ran like crap, then wouldn't start again. I pulled #1 spark plug and there was no fire, checked the rest and no fire on any of the others. Checked the plug/coil wires with my ohm meter and they were all good. It has a new coil and rotor on so I know their good. Can I pull the cap/rotor and distributor gears and crank it to seek if the point spark?

Is there a procedure on checking the mag to see where the problems might be? What would it take to switch it to a distributor ignition (parts)?

Any help appreciated.

The local Case/IH dealer has a tuneup kit for the mag in stock, price is $14.00. Since I don't know when the last time it was tuned up I'm going to install it this week. The tractor was my Dad's he bought it in 53, we used it to buck bales. I moved away from the farm in 84, went and got it in 2000, it sat the whole time.

perhaps some condensation occurred in the mag, open it up and blow her dry and clean off the points.

Bob - I ran into a similar "no start" situation with a buddy's H just last night. It had been running fine a few weeks ago but refused to start yesterday.

Problem turned out dirty breaker points. We opened the mag, drew a dollar bill through the points a few times to shine them up, then buttoned it back up. The old H then started right up and ran fine.

I would do two things first. Sounds like the condensor may be bad. Replace it first, then clean and regap the points. You can take the mag off the tractor and put it in a vise. Put a plug wire in the mag with a spark plug on the other end. Make sure the plug is grounded to the vise. You then can fire the mag by hand to check the spark. Reinstall the mag. Tractor supply usually has parts for the mags. Good luck and dont freeze.
