The park doesn't always hold on my 856. Can it be adjusted or what is the best way to fix it?

K.B-826: My '70 826 has been updated with the spring evidently, because if it lands between the teeth, it "ratchets" a couple of teeth before catching and locking down the tractor.

Like the vet says, your linkage is more than likely bent. Problem with the old style is that the linkage between the lever and the park pawl is totally solid. The park pawl drops in between two teeth on the reverse driven gear, which prevents the tractor from moving. When you engage the park lock, the pawl may hit the top of one of the gear teeth. When this happens, the lever will only move halfway down. If you then try to force the lever all of the way down, the linkage will bend, effectivly shortening the linkage, which will cause the problem you've got now. The 86 series tractors came with the new style spring loaded park pawl. Basically a very heavy spring on the park pawl. The linkage is such that even if the pawl lands on the top of a gear tooth, the handle will go all of the way into park. As soon as the tractor rolls a bit, the spring forces the pawl down in between two teeth. This style is much safer and can be installed on any of the big-frame tractors back to the 706. Like the vet says, it is a bit of a job for the first-timer, but if you've got any other issues with the range shift linkage, this will give you an exellent chance to rebuild the linkage and the parts that hang off the bottom of the range trans cover.

If it has the old style then yes it can be adjusted , but heres the deal more then likely the linkage is starting to bend and unless you have fixed them befor and sorta know how it is suppose to look then best not try as they are not made into a perfect 90degree bends from the factory . THe old adjustable park lock is a overcenter style and should requier a little effort to snap over center . Now what i have been doing is spending the hundred and so bucks and buying the up dated SPRING LOADED park lock they are somuch better and safer . But this will requier removal of the range transmission shiftcover . This is not a hard job but it is nice to have and extra set of hands to help . IF you chose to do this i will explain later on the steps you have to do for the removal.
