On my 1951 M I have a Heisler 9 speed transmission with the hi-standard lever on the left side of the gear shift lever. On the right side in the location you mention I have a belly pump disconnect lever so you can disconnect the belly pump when in high range with the Heisler engaged. The purpose is to keep from over running the belly pump as the pump drive shaft is also running at a higher RPM when in the high range. If you have a Heisler transmission it is somewhat different looking then the M&W described in another post. It has a lever which looks somewhat like a gear shift lever and mounts on the top plate with rigid solid linkage running up along the left side of the transmission case to where it enters the case. Hope this helps. Hal

may be the lever for the belt pulley? my 9 speed has a cable with a big knob you either push in or pull out. hard to say, post a picture if you can. maybe it is a secret farmer invention, that when activated, triples you crop yield at no aditional cost!!!

If shaft lever is on comes out side of transmission case its probably 9 speed shift lever. If shaft comes out just below front of transmission case it may be a hydraulic pump disconnect shifter. Both if complete should have a rod from lever up to operators reach to shift them. Most if not all M&W levers on side of transmission will have M&W gear anchor IL that you can read on them or something like that. Just to caution you if it is a 9 speed and does'nt work I have found things like missing internal 9 speed parts but shifter left in. Shift linkage inside broke or disconnected, Welds inside trans. to lock in range when some of shifting parts or range gears go bad.

The first thing I would do step on the clutch and move the lever. I think it is safe to say it is not an auto-destruct device.

I once had a pickup truck stolen but was able to recover it when the police found it abandoned by the side of the road. I had installed a dump hoist under the box and the thieves couldn't figure how to put fuel in the tank. All they had to do was push in the clutch, move an obvious lever, and raise the body about a foot.
