i'm looking at buying a live hydraulic pump for my M. the one i'm looking at runs power steering. is this pump only good for power steering or can i run other hydraulics, like loader, 3-point, etc or is it too small for that? right now i have a loader on the tractor and have the pto pump set up, just curious of this other pump would do the trick.
thanks
Garry

The one I have has a hook up in the front center of the belly pump case thats where the hydralic supply line hooks up.

The hydraulic pump shown in the first picture I saw here is either a Behlen or an M&W. The factory IH pumps have the lines coming out of the bottom of the pump, Behlen and M&W have the lines coming out of the top.The pump from a super m should fit an m. I have a pump from a 400 on my SM as it has about 2gpm more flow capacity than my original IH pump.As for older M,s having to change the front timing cover, I have 2 sons that have a1942 and a 1944 M and both have been switched over to live hydraulics with factory IH pumps and no other changes were needed. Hope that helps

Alan, is the one your talking about a behlen? i think that is what this one is that i'm looking at. i dont especially need more then power steering, but it would be nice to have two way power instead of single.

No,

Mine is an IH pump off of a 300 and mounted to my H.

You would need the pump off of a 400 or 450 to fit that M. Anytime the engine is running, you have hydraulics.

actually, i think the tractor it's on right now is a 400. i got it from an insurance company after a fire. mostly cause they did not want much and i might need parts. i have not looked lately, but seems to me there is a resevoir for the pump and it also hooks in for power steering. i was thinking it was behlen power steering but maybe it's not. did the 400 come with factor live pump and power steering?

Is the pump belt driven or engine driven?

Garry, the Behlen pump has the Behlen logo cast into it, you can't mistake it. I've got a picture somewhere of the Behlen set-up on my H. If you need to see it, let me know. In fact, it might be in the tractor photos, or parts and pieces. Do a search for RustyFarmall.

Okay,

That's probably a full-blown IH gear drive pump and should work very nicely for your M's loader, hitch, steering, etc., etc.

Gary,

Can you get a picture of this beast? We could tell for sure if we could put an eyeball to it.

This site lists a M&W pump for M in parts they sell. Never saw one they sell but if its like the originals it will bolt to any M. It says threaded holes in top of pump for lines, which would be like the original M&W pump. Should be new with the price thats on it.

Allen, did you have to change the timing cover to put that pump on your H?

Ive also got a real good IH pump and resivior off a Super M,, simular to the one in the photo if anyone needs it, I think it has to have the later timing cover,, the bolt pattern is not the same as the M,,, its bigger,, Ive got a H that I have a pump like the one you have, that Id like to put live HYD on it. If you're looking to buy one of those rare Behlen or M&W pumps, don't buy it to use. Rare, no parts, and not suitable for a loader. Better to put it on eBay, make a hefty profit, and use the proceeds to buy a NEW factory-style live pump for your M. That way you won't be stuck with an unrepairable, unusable hunk of junk.

If you're talking about a belt-drive pump, then it's not a real "live" pump. It's an old power steering pump off a pickup truck that someone cobbled together. Don't waste your time.

Also, if your M isn't a 1950 or newer, you will need to change out the front engine plate, front cover, and timing gears to add the factory live pump.

Behlen? The pump that mounts ahead of the distributor? I don't think that one has the capacity to do much more than provide power steering. I could be wrong.

they did make an aftermarket pump that ran off the distrobutor drive, it wont run a loader. you can get a live pump and then add a power steering priority vale to run both power steering and hydraulics for the m. oem tractor parts sells the whole charlynn kit.
