MY H TRACTOR RUNS ROUGH WHEN I OPEN UP THE THROTTAL, IT WILL RUN SMOOTHER AFTER A SECOND OR 2. I HAD THE CARB REBUILT AND ADJUSTED AND NEW POINTS,CONDENSER,CAP,ROTOR ALL DONE BY A REPAIR SHOP,DID A COMPRESSION CHECK(LOOKS VERY GOOD) BUT AS SOON AS I GIVE HER THE GAS , SHE STARTS TO SOUND LIKE A POPPIN JOHNNY, ANY IDEAS? COULD THE GOVENOR BE THE PROBLEM.

Does the choke make any difference? My H was running as you describe and I found the little screw that holds the choke plate on the rod had sheared letting the plate flop around. Like to drove me nuts for a while. The screw was a pain to get out but luckly I had a spare in an old carb kit. Ed

Check for leaks in intake Manifold.

Are you letting the engine warm up a bit before you pull back on the throttle? Spitting, sputtering, and missing is perfectly normal with a cold engine.

Depending on who rebuilt the carb, they might not even know the settings. Warm the tractor up. Set at wide open throttle, turn the main mixture needle in until it just begins to run unevenly, then out until it runs smooth, plus maybe a 1/2 turn. No need to turn it out until it smokes. You want the mixture lean, or just rich enough so that it performs well under load, no more. Do the same to the idle mixture. Pull the throttle back rapidly, if it does not accelerate smoothly, do the main and idle again. If it still will not accelerate smoothly, your carb was likely not rebuilt properly. This assumes no ignition problem, no intake manifold leaks, etc.

Differant times of year also can mean haveing to reset the main jet or you can have problems. Try turning the mani jet screw out about 1/2-1 turn and see if that helps. Also another way to set it would be to turn it out till you see black smoke and then turn it back in till the smoke stops.

Usually caused from running too lean. The H carb doesn"t have an accelerator pump to take care of the problem. You could richen up the mixture, but don"t make it smoke (too rich) all the time. In my experience, using the tractor all the time and fresh gas will aleviate the problem.

"I think" that you should turn the adjustment screw on lower right of the Carb in 1/2 turn.

Tom, I"m not 100% sure, but I think you"d need to turn it out to richen the mixture a bit.
