Read the TA posts down the line a ways and It says out or slipping. Mine simply does nothing in low about 1 in 100 times. What i mean is it works perfect most of the time and then all of a sudden I pull the lever and nothing happens. What could be my problem and how do you adjust them ? I noticed the rod from lever to arm on the side of the case is completely threaded all the way short as possible. Does this tell me something? Thanks for any help on this in advance.

Fred: Once these slip, 99.9% of the time it's too late for adjustment. You can try adjustment but it will most likely be a short term cure. Rebuilding is not for the novis. There is a lot of work just getting it out of the housing.

Find yourself a professional technician for the actual TA rebuild, or quite often it will be just as economical to trade yours for a rebuilt unit. There are hundreds of stories in YT archives of inexperience rebuilding TA's only to have them last a very short time. They must love mucking around in grease. A professionally rebuilt unit, properly installed, properly maintained and properly used will last 10,000 hours.

Don't let anyone try to tell you TA is a poor tractor component. People have been the problem. When you get a new rebuilt unit properly installed, don't let it free wheel, shift it quickly, in road gear adjust throttle to compensate for gear change and check adjustment with operator's manual every 6 months. It will serve you well.

When a mechanical T/A starts doing this she is on her way to lunch . What is happening here is that it finds the flat spots on the rollers and slips thru . Now if the quill is not to bad then a new set of rollers and springs will give ya somemore life but if the quill is scored then it is time for a rebuild to make it new again .

You need to buy or borrow a copy of the operators manual or an IT manual for your tractor. It details the adjustment and that may be your problem. The adjustment is quite precise and will also make a difference in shifting the transmission. If you have trouble getting the tractor out of gear it indicates the TA is out of adjustment. Generally when the TA goes out it will slip in the low end but can be both low and high or high only.
