I WIRED A BN THAT HAD NO ELECTRIC,,TO BOB M`S #57 ILLUSTRATION(ELECTRIC STARTER AND LIGHTS). my gen. is a (completely rebuilt) 12 volts delco remy mod-1102096,,ser.9f 9.and looking at the rear of the gen. the post at 11 oclock is marked F and the one at 1 oclock is marked A. the original switch box was purchased from a gent. in western pa. and is a coil ignition. my problem is when i went to polarize the gen. i had no spark,,so i rechecked wiring several times and it is matched up to bobs m # 57. while checking i rotated the switch clockwise to 2nd position,,and at the 3rd. and 4th position the generator started turning like an electric motor,,as the belt is not on yet. is the problem my regulator ( and how to check if so ) or is it the rotary switch in the box. 9 and how to check if so ) .,. i have rewired many an old system in my years but that don`t mean im too old to learn, so please help me through this senior moment. may God bless.

Farmer, Sounds like you may be trying to crossbreed a 3 Terminal (BAT ARM FLD) or a 4 Terminal (BAT ARM FLD LOAD) Voltage Regulator to a simple 2 wire (BAT GEN/ARM) Cutout Relay and light switch control charging system. Dont be upset, REGARDLESS what you have we can make it work, cuz with the right wiring (even if not per a Standard Bob Diagram) it can charge n work fine.

The black box device on the genny how many wiring terminals does it have and are they labeled????? ????? ?????

If we know what you have we can tell you how to make it work REGARDLESS, provided that if its just the simple 2 wire cutout relay, you have the correct (sounds like you do) 4 position LHBD light switch. Still, if its a 3 or 4 terminal Voltage Regulator, it can work regardless which switch you have even if some of the positions arent wired and used.

Apparently you have the battery wire going someplace wrong as that is the only way you are getting battvoltage to the A term thus making it motor

I agree with KEB. The cutout relay system (which is what the light switch you have is designed for will work on the tractor, but the L H positions will be used for Lights OFF, and not the generator. Assuming a three terminal regulator, it should have a #10 wire from the A terminal of the Gen to the A terminal of the Reg. It should have a #12 or 14 wire running from the F terminal on Gen to F terminal on Reg. It should have a #10 wire running from the Bat terminal on the Reg to the terminal on the amp meter not connected to the starter switch battery side stud. The light switch will have one wire comming from the same amp meter terminal connected to the Gen (called the load side), and going to the light switch terminal supplying power to the lights. (The lights are dimmed by having a resistor on the switch reduce their voltage for dim.) I hope this helps, keep us informed, JimN

Do you have a link to that wiring diagram? I looked on Bob's website (http://albums.photo.epson.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=4001561&a=30065733&f=0) and don't see anything that matches your description.

The 3rd and 4th positions on the switch are supposed to power the lights. The fact that the generator motors means that somehow with the switch in this position you have connected the battery directly to the generator. Without the generator working, the battery terminal on the regulator should be isolated from the generator itself.

Do the lights work? They should come on with the battery.

Does the ammeter show current draw with the lights on?

Suspect a wiring error, but will need to look at how its supposed to be wired to see what would give the symptoms you describe.

Good luck,

Keith

Think I found it. It's Bob's photo number 14, Farmall A/B stock wiring diagram. If this is what you're looking at, it's for a generator with a cutout relay, not a regulator.

Any possibility you might have confused the field resistor and light dimmer resistor when you wired the switch box? If so, battery voltage would be applied to the generator field winding when the switch was in the 3 or 4 position.

A good description of exactly what's connected to what would be a big help.

Keith
