Just put the tractor in 4th gear going forward with the TA in HI, apply a load with brakes and pull the TA back, if the tractor stops the TA is OUT!!! Ninety % of the time its the low side that goes bad due to the sprag clutch design.

I agree with Nat. Also Starting out in 5th TA back, full throttle, then just as it gets to speed, rapidly (all shifts of TA should be done this way) put the lever ahead. this puts strain on the system in the same way it would plowing. If it passes this test a few times (one when well warmed up. JimN

The only way to really check is to take the tractor out, hook it to a REAL load, lug it down, then pull the TA lever. If the tractor downshifts and keeps moving, then it's probably okay.

A reasonable facsimile would be to put the tractor in road gear, get it moving, stomp on the brakes, and pull the TA lever.

A properly adjusted TA will hold the tractor in one spot on going uphill with the clutch halfway out. That is, you can let off the brakes and the tractor won't roll back down the hill.
