brake disk clearance

Hello,
I've got the new actuators all cleaned up and assembled with new springs for my SWD9. I also have brand new pads for it. I set the brake castings up on the bench and laid the entire actuator and both brake pads in them. Question is, what is the ideal clearance to have between the brake pad and the back of the brake castings. It looks like I have about .100-.125 of an inch. I'm sure I'll lose much of the mechanical advantage of the actuators having it set up this way and it sure stretches my new springs quite a bit. I'm thinking about machining off the back of the brake casting. What is the right amount of clearance? I don't want them too tight so they don't release.

Thank you,

Mark

I have not heard of any spec for that. Just set the correct pedal clearance with the adjusting rod. I don't think you can really tell anything with them off the tractor, and the only machining I would do is to get rid of grooves, etc -- even that may not be necessary. You could have the wrong pads, also.

I"ve machined a lot of brake parts for the local IH dealer. He wanted the assembled brake components to be 1/32 inch lower than the edge of the drum. Also he had me turn down 560 discs to fit the smaller tractors as he said the brake disc material was no good in the smaller discs (the spline was the same size. I turned off about an inch and it stinks...not good for the lungs. John
