SMTA frame rails.

I'd like to remove just one frame rail at a time, to clean and paint. Where do I need to jack/block/support the tractor to just remove one rail?

Just use the other frame rail, and be careful -- I did the same thing on my Super H. I painted the inside of the rails, which I doubt was done at the factory. If you think it will affect painting the block behind the rail with the rail installed, it won't, as I painted mine with both rails installed.

Another brain malfunction--that's at least two today, and the day is not over. I was thinking of when I removed the front bolster as Bob did. I just removed one at a time with no blocking. The only thing you gain by removing them, anyway, is cleaning out the crud and painting them -- you can clean the block behind easy enough with them installed -- it will make it easier, though.

When I did my diesel MTA, I bolted stands to the bell housing, removed the front bolster, and took both frame rails off at the same time. I let the engine hang on the bell housing. Then I put a couple bolts back thru the back plate on the engine, made me feel a little better about seeing the engine hang out in space. That way I could sandblast and paint the engine block behind the rails while I did the rest of the tractor. It also allowed me to pressure wash and clean out the under side of the bolster good. It wasn't difficult either. All it took was an engine hoist. The diesel engine is alot heavier than a gas one and also bolts to top side of the frame rails in the front. On a gas I don't think you would really have to block anything up. Just don't try to move it around while in the process. I gave the inside of the frame rails and behind them primer and one coat of paint, then put everything back together for the second and third coats. That way the bolt heads wouldn't get scarred up in assembly. I'm real happy with how it turned out. I could probably send you some pictures of the process.

Hi,
I am in the process of completeing my MDTA restoration, and I am getting her ready for paint. Could you send me some photos of your recent restoration on your diesel? Also any tips prior to paint?
Thanks.

I considered doing that once, but then didn't. I think it will work though. Probably want to support the tractor directly under the clutch housing, right where the rear engine mounting plate is attached. I think you would want the front tires to still be in contact with the ground.

Thanks guys. I'll put a bottle jack under the bellhousing just for insurance, do one at a time. As far as painting bolt heads, I always use brand new bolts, everywhere, and one grade higher than original. Give them a prepsol bath and then clearcoat. When I hear the correct Police talk about "all original bolts"I shudder. Who wants 50 year old hardware holding a brand new otherwise tractor together?
