To get one now you have to give the model and serial number. Some folks have been turned down because someone else submitted their serial number before (and maybe listed the cap on Ebay). The program is scheduled to end in May 2007.

James: I probably received my first free gas cap somewhere in the vicinity of 40 years ago. I was at the IH dealer buying parts and the partsman gave me new caps for each tractor we had on the farm with the old type cap. At that time I figured that would be the end of the practice. I also noticed he was asking folks he probably didn't know quite as well, what they had for tractors. I just supposed these were folks who had bought a used IH tractor. I thought at the time 10 years and this program will be gone.

I'm sure now, 40 years later IH and later Navistar have put out 3 times as many caps as they ever did tractors with the old type cap. Our 300 in 55 came with the new type cap. 130 in 58 didn't. I was given at least another round of free caps in the mid 80s It's certainly interesting where all those caps have gone to, as it's not uncommon to find tractors still around with the old type cap. When I bought my 140 three years ago it still had the old cap. I've looked at a couple others in the past 5 years with old caps.

I quite agree it's time the practice came to an end. Some folks must be using these for ornaments.

For a long time I felt the same way. But then I decided "when in Rome, etc." I placed my order for 4 caps yesterday.

I have gotten 3 caps for myself. They are on a H,M,and a cub. I was shocked when they came I figured it would be one of those things "its in the mail".They are for sale at CIH ,but the way I figured thats more money I can put on other parts.

As far as fire not being a issue, its because gas itself is hard enough to burn nowdays muchless blow up.

Your right NDS why would anyone think they should get free parts for a 40 to 60 year old tractor. Talk about kicking a company when their down.

Afer paying $3,874.35 for a very small pile of parts last Friday, I certainly did not feel like I kicked Case while it was down by applying for and receiving a $4.00 gas cap!

Typical human BS! I received "one". Painted my "one" cap, and installed it on my "one" tractor. Thanks IH/Navistar.

I've noticed the same thing with many folks taking advantage of this. Of course :-(

Keep in mind that these gas caps are also available for purchase at any CaseIH dealer, so someone selling a gas cap is not automatically a thief.

I agree though. Enough is enough. IH, then Navistar has been giving these caps away since I was a mere boy. The gas cap offer has protected them from lawsuits caused by earlier leaky gas caps. It's getting to the point where the chances of a fire are pretty slim, and providing the caps is becoming more expensive than settling a lawsuit.

Amazingly enough, none of the three Farmalls I purchased in the last three years had a new cap.

If anything, it will be refreshing to not have to wade through the weekly discussions on how to get free gas caps, or how bad Navistar's customer service is because their FREE cap took X days to arrive in the mail, or how they ordered a cap X hours ago and it hasn't come in yet...

There are some on ebay now. I got 5 yesterday and they are on 5 of my tractors today. It is a shame what some people will stoop to!

What bug's me is when people tend salvage yard's, just to get serial #'s so they can get gas cap's and sell them...
