PTO on 560 wont shut off, any ideas as to what needs to be done? At first I thought the lever was a little stuck, but its not any better after I freed that up. The lever wont go quite far enough forward to lock out. Just bought the tractor this summer, so its nothing I am familiar with with . Thanks.

I had the same problem with mine after I bought it and I have the clutch type without the adjustment hole and I had to take it out and adjust it, it took me several tries before I got it right. I went out and got the manuals from Binder books they are copies of the IH service manuals and they walked me through it. A pain to keep taking out to adj but sure beat the alternative.Mine is a late 61 early 62 made right at the break.

Did 560's basically have a bad pto system then?

We have 2 300's that were used for everything around the farm and I know that the pto has not been worked on in either one of them for 40 yrs and I doubt if they got worked on before that

IH Man: Those 3 IPTOs from 1954 to 1962 were part of the evolution, they stood up decent on 300, 330, 350, 340 and 460. They were less decent on the 400, 450 and 560. IH only got it right when 06 series came along.

300s doing heavy pto work would burn that planetary pto up as well, I rebuilt mine 4 or 5 times in 35 years.

ejr: Your thinking of the planetary type, don't think any of those were ever put in 560s. There is another PTO unit in between the planetary type and the clutch type, that one adjusted through the top hole. Two clutch type PTOs were used in 340, 460 and 560. Early clutch type had to be removed from tractor for adjustment. Not sure about 660 standard.

I'm almost sure that the early 560 had the planetary PTO. Our neighbors have an early 560 that has the planetary style. The clutch styles are basically the same with the exception of the big adjustment hole on the top of the later ones. We've got three Farmall 460s, the '59 has the planetary, the '61 has the early clutch style and the '63 has the late clutch style (with the big nut on top).

Tim: I don't have much quarrel with what your saying. I have seen planetary type on 460s, I've not seen it on 560s, but then I never checked serial numbers of the ones I saw either. Maybe I've never looked at a very early 560s. My own 560 was a 62 model, thus I should have said I've never seen it.

With regards to the particular PTO in question, I've never seen a planetary with this symptom. Very common with the clutch type, therefore I think the question at hand is adjustment of the clutch type. Having said this, and while the two clutch type are very similar, the adjustment proceedure is quite different, thus I feel it is imperitive he find out which type he has, then find the proper manual for that adjustment. From the description, quite frankly I think his PTO is toast.

I rebuilt the planetary in my 300 several times in 35 years. I rebuilt the clutch type in my 560 at least 5 maybe 6 times in 17 years. Bear in mind that 560 was turning out 90 hp all those years and was worked accordingly.

This sounds all to familiar to me, I had a 560 years ago and when that happened the PTO was usually toast. Can you stop the PTO from turning by holding forward on PTO lever? If so make the adjustment in lever linkage as WI cowman suggests. That adjustment and forward notch on lever is the brake for the PTO. That failing you might try clutch pack adjustment within the PTO.

Do you know which type of PTO your 560 has? There were two, both looked very much alike on the outside. There was a change mid way in production, I don't know the serial number at change. With the early models the PTO had to be removed from tractor for PTO clutch pack adjustment. On late model tractors clutch pack adjustment was done through a 1.5" round hole in top of PTO. You should have the proper manual and try clutch pack adjustment.

You could have clutch pack adjusted too strong, thus it is over powering the brake. Fair warning though, they do the same when the unit is toast. I had my 560 for 17 years never got the clutch pack over adjusted, but I did rebuilt it every couple of years. Bear in mind my 560 was turning 90 hp all those years. 1954 to 1963 were the years of IPTO evolution, IH didn't get it right until 06 series tractors in my opinion.
