OT replacing a distributor

I'm putting new head and manifold gaskets in my '95 Chevy 4.3L V6 and did not set the motor to TDC before I took the distributor out. To clean the gasket scrapings out of the cylinders I turned the motor over several times. Now it is set at TDC (#1, both valves closed). When I looked in the manual for the proceedure for replacing a distributor, there was nothing.

Should the tab on the rotor be lined up dead center on the #1 terminal in the cap, or should the corner just be coming up on the terminal ?

Thanks

Greg

About '95 or 96', GM had a real FIT with the 4.3's, making several verisons.

If your's has a CRANK POSITION SENSOR in the engine's front cover, that controls the exact timing, and the distributor only has to be CLOSE to the correct postion, so the rotor is lined up with the appropriate "nipple" when the crank sensor and 'puter fire the coil.

If it does NOT have the front crank sensor, AFAIK, a timing light will have to be used to finalize setting the distributor position.

If it has the crank sensor up front, I believe the 'puter will output an "offset" signal to a scan tool, to verify the distributor is timed close enough for the rotor to be in the correct place when the coil "fires".

I realize this post isn't of much help, however, you need to refer to the 8TH digit of the VIN, and, hopefully someone can respond specifically for the engine you have!

The link below will show you how many different 4.3's there were in the 90's, although I don't think it goes very deep into the distributor timing:

There does not appear to be a crank position sensor on this motor. No mention in the manual and no wires to the front cover for a pick up. The sticker on the air cleaner gives a timing proceedure using a timing light. I'd just like to minimize the fooling around to get the distributor back in right.

The sad thing is that I made a note in an older service manual to put #1 at TDC before removing the distributor...

If your's is the simple setup, with no crank sensor, it should be simple enough to get the timing close enought to start it, then use the timing light.
