I have an M with a conversion kit LP system. I've been told that sometimes when those conversions were done they also changed the head to something zippier than the the regular M heads were. Can anyone tell me how to determine whether this might have been done on this tractor? I seems like there might have been a number of head options that could have shown up on a tractor like mine. Any info about that? Thanks.

when converting an m to propane the dealer would install 8000' high compression pistons. m+w and tractor supply also sold pistons recommended for propane conversions. it would be very unlikely if anyone would have went to the expense of buying a 364586 head for their m when the pistons would do the same thing and the tractor probably needed overhauling anyway. i hope this helps, randy, ps. thanks for the 'plug' dej, my head is bigger now.

Some M head updates depending on when they were done may very well have the LP head. The LP heads weren't used until about mid way thru the 400 production serial numbers. I can't tell you the exact head number, but the head is noticeably different than an M head. The difference is on the manifold side of the head. The LP head has a kind of protrusion out towards the manifold. There is a guy from Ohio, Randy Hall, who pretty much knows LP's inside and out. He may post a response to you.

I think that there were no LP factory Ms. Thus there are no stock High compression heads. The high altitude *000 ft head may be higher compression than a standard gasoline head, I'm not sure. Piston top configuration may have been used to achieve more compression. The propane head from a factory 450 I'm sure, and maybe 400s would be the highest compression. JimN
