I had a interesting experience last week. I cut hay Thursday night with my 300U with no problems. Finished about 8PM. Friday I was cutting some more around noon and noticed smoke coming from under the hood. I got off and saw flames on top of the manifold next to the gas tank. Turns out something had tried to build a nest in that short time and it caught fire. Didn't do any damage. Guess I'm pretty lucky it wasn't a major disaster.

This happens frequently. My first experience was fire from under the hood of a 140. Shut it down to stop the fan air and managed to pull the rest of the burning nest off the exhaust manifold. I always check now before cranking from early spring to late summer. 2 weeks ago a wren built a nest and had layed 3 eggs within 3 days of parking the tractor. I pull out 4 - 6 a year. Wrens never learn.

Neighbor of mine has had 3 fires on his A, but he forgets to check. A gas hose and carburetor below the manifold makes this dangerous.

I was thinking about starting a thread on this topic and am glad to see others have the same problem.

Had the same experience with a 140. Wren built nest on the valve cover next to the exhaust manifold.

Sometime around 1980, we were picking corn for a neighbor, who had a bumper crop. I was using dads old M and a two row mounted New Idea picker. After dinner that day I was picking along and noticed a small flame coming around the muffler. I thought I would take my hat and beat it out(WRONG) Just as I stood up the tractor, picker and all went puff and flames surrounded me. It burned all my hair and eyebrows off. I did manage to get the outfit out of standing corn. I don't know how, it only had one plug wire left when we fixed it. My dad had a fit, blamed it all on me. The only damage it done was smoked up the paint and burned several wires off. It cost 7 dollars at the time for a set of plug wires and we were back to picking.
