The cover plate on the right side (sitting on tractor) of my SH has a considerable OIL leak. Is there supposed to be oil behind that? I thought it was like the left side, a water jacket cover. Do I have to remove the distributor to install new gasket?

Thanks guys, that's what I needed to know. Want to get all the leaks and little stuff done before we blast/prime/paint! Poor little gal was huffin and puffin sm sq baling some heavy grass windrows. I couldn't stand it and hooked up the 966.2200 PTO speed and the live PTO . Done deal in a NY minute! And probably less fuel costs with the red diesel!

Gordo - That's the tappet cover, or "pushrod chamber side plate" as it's referred to the parts book. And yes, there is indeed oil behind it!

I've not had the cover off on my SH. But I'd suspect that by removing the distributor cap you can probably "worry" the cover off without removing the distributor body. And even if you do have to remove the distributor, simply mark the rotor location on the side of the dist body before removing. Then as long as you do not move the crankshaft with the distributor off, simply align the rotor with the mark you made when you reinstall the distributor and you'll be all set.

If its got the IH horizontal distributor, I think you may want to remove the ignition coil to get clearance and maybe the oil filter? The vent tube might also have a bracket on the bottom end that is attached to one of the oil pan bolts?
