1086 overheating

We've got a 1086 that started overheating back in the spring while harrowing. Since then we've replaced the radiator cap, thermostat, outer air element, washed out the radiator, washed the engine and topped the radiator off. Despite all this it still heats up, theres no oil leaking out the front so we don't think it's a water pump bearing but it could be.

Does anyone have an idea as to while the thing still overheats?

Thanks for any help
Nick

I had that problem once with a truck engine. The water pump impeller was spinning on the shaft. Wayne

The 400 series engines are famous for flat cam lobes. One of the symptoms of a flat cam is overheating. The easiest way to tell is to pull the cover off of the air cleaner and there will make popping sound at full throttle.

Does it use coolant? Could be a headgasket leaking. Check the temperature of the lower radiator hose when it is heating up. If it is normal then that would indicate flow issues. Find someone with an Infra Red temp reader is the best way to read surface temp.

The radiator may need to be rodded to clean the tubes. They may be plugged from ethylene glycol
antifreeze that's lost it rust inhibitor. Hal

Re 584 rad, had the same problem on 454. Replaced water pump, thermostat, cleaned rad air passages, flushed rad about 3 times. Rad shop suggested a steam clean of rad and that fixed it.

The only exterior sign was that at high RPM the lower rad hose would appear to be suck in or collapsing even though there was a metal spring inside hose. We had replaced the hose as well.

I don't know of any of above applies to your 1086!

Can't really say, but our 584 done that a few years ago and we tried everything you have with no luck. Turned out that recoring the radiator fixed it, still don't know exactly what was wrong the radiator. I guess maybe stopped up.
