First, let me say thanks to all of you who have helped me in earlier posts. I am new to the IH world (Case transplant) and I hope I don't wear out my welcome but I do have another question.

On my IH 424, I frequently and intermittently get a noise which I am having trouble pinpointing. This noise if I could describe it sounds like a high speed shutter - similar to sliding a metal table across a cement floor where the legs slightly shudder and vibrate. This noise can occur at idle when I move the steering wheel back and forth. Sometimes moving the wheel will cause the noise to start and sometimes it will cause it to stop. To me, it sounds like noise from either the hydraulic pump or the power steering pump (does the 424 have both?) I am presently not certain where either are (books are on the way). Sometimes the noise can come when you engage the PTO but not always and the PTO and hydraulics seem to work fine. THe noise generally goes away at higher RPM and sometimes sitting still if I reduce the throttle down to idle, it will all of the sudden start making the noise. I was hoping that someone could tell me something to try to see if I can pinpoint it or maybe some valve to shut or open to help isolate the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

After further investigation, I have pinpointed the noise (with a screwdriver and my ear). It is coming from the flow divider assy or flow divider valve. I am wondering if the fluid in it is not high enough viscosity. Does anyone know what the viscosity or ratings of IH Hytran is?

Thanks

Chris Hibbert

I tried to find that out too. But Hytran (all transmision fluid really) isnt rated like regular oil is. So good luck. I got premium Hytran from TSC that says IH and case approved. Ill let ya know if it works good.

We have the same noise in our 2500b. We JUST drained it (new to us tractor) and its all emulsified. Surely that could cause it? So were starting there.

Ill watch this thread and let you know if we get out shudder noise stopped. Hoping between fluid, new lines and filter it will be solved. Its not a good sound to hear!

John-Paul T,

I'll be anxious to see how things work out for you. I am just about to go clean the screens now and take a good look at the fluid. I pulled a screw and saw fluid that was a good clear honey color so I don't think there's any emulsified water in there but it's possible. The odd thing is that the noise doesn't seem to causer any ill effects - everything works well - it's just unsettling to hear it. Well post your results here and I will do the same.

Chris

Should know today or tommorow (gotta find time now). They sent the wrong filter so it put us back a few days. However the old filter was BAD, it was sucked in some from being so clogged (hydro pump crushed it) and the diverter valve I think was the noise from being activated so much! THe filter fell apart when removed there are two metal plates one on each side that are supposed to be attached. They fell off haha LOL. New one was $40 but it came with all 3 gaskets and those two metal plates attached to it.

Gonna put it in tonight I hope right after the hose changes. Only about 20 dry rotted hoses (from sun exposure). I might have to find some braided hose covers, heard they last up to 10 eyars that way. Oh well at $12-14 a hose at TSC its not worth risking a hose breaking thats wicked (had a rental backhoe do that-NOT fun). Once you have had 2000psi near 200F hytran oil blowing around near you -you dont risk it!

Any progress with your tractor yet? What did you find out when checking the filter? Does look alright.

Pull the filter screen on the lower left side, below the seat. there is a metal tube comming out of it, and a short section of rubber hose. There is also a filter under the dash sitting horizontal. I love my 424 Diesel, although I have it for sale as I just got a 460 utility and I can;t afford to keep both.

It is normal for the 424 & 444 tractors to have a rattel noise coming from the front transmission area at idel speeds. Not all of these tractors do this and the ones that do may not do it every time. It is caused by the transmission gear setup and will not hurt anything after you get use to it. You have a great little tractor that will last a long time and do a lot of work. Good luck. PGN.

Hey G, your going to like this tractor. I have a 1967 gas and love it. There is a valve under and in front of the seat that needs to be all the way in or out. It diverts the hydro fluid if your using add on equiptment. Check that it is not half way open.. could be your noise.
Good luck... post some pics.

You will get spoiled with an old IH. Is it a diesel? Sometimes diesels will rattle the transmission shafts a little causing some noise. The steering works right off the hydraulic pump. The pump itself could be sucking a little air from time to time, causing it to chatter the pump a little.

It's a gasoline. Where can I find the pump (hydraulic) at? I want to take a stethoscope and see if that is where the noise comes from.

Thanks for your help

Chris

Chris, it is on the front right corner of the engine. There will be a couple of lines coming off it to the rear of tractor. I would do as Heyseed suggested and check that knob.
