My father in law has found a nice 1 owner 400 gas that's barn fresh. It's a 56 according to the s/n, narrow front, with no fenders. It starts and runs good, but how does he check the t/a? I'm also curious if all the 400's had power steering? He took some nice pictures and heard it run, but they didn't get to drive it on the first visit. What does he need to do/look for on the next visit? There are 2 hydraulic cylinders that appear to be part of the fast hitch. On is attached to the hitch in the rear, and the other is on the right side of the tractor just in front of the axle and below it. I saw a 450 at the county fair tonight and it only had the one in the rear. What's the difference? Any help is appreciated.

Another TA test is to stop the tractor on an uphill incline with the transmission in gear and the TA lever forward, then let the clutch pedal about halfway out. It should hold the tractor in place without the brakes if everything is in working order and the TA is adjusted properly.

Power steering was an option on the 400.

The fast hitch on the 450 superceeded the earlier hitch. Only the drawbar, latches, and 3.5" x 8" cylinder are interchangeable between the two The later hitch has traction control. The earlier hitch has depth control. The right side small bore cylinder will move the front pivot point of the wishbone up or down. Most people prefer the earlier fast hitch.

Nothing in the parts book that covers the 400 and 450 models indicates a starting date for the power steering. I own a Farmall 400 with serial #519. The first thing I did, when I bought it six years ago, was add PS with the IH parts listed in the 400-450 parts book. I also added a Behlin torque generator (steering actuator used by IH) on a SMTA and bought two more SMTAs already modified with the factory kit. The retrofit kits were probably not available for several years until after SMTA production.

Darin, to test the TA just put the tractor in gear and start driving, then pull the TA handle back and use the brakes to see if it keeps pulling or slips. If it pulls it is good and if it slips it needs a rebuild. Try it in 4th or 5th gear. I don't think factory power steering was available until the 50 series came out, but am not sure. Lots of them have had it added to them. The front cylinder is likely for the drafting mechanism on the hitch. This is to put an angle on the hitch for turning plows and other ground engaging implements. Most of those are usually missing now days.

George seems like I remember 1956 as the year IH released the power steering attachment for 100 series tractors. Would have to find where I have that information to be sure. Do know 56 was first year for the pipe from air cleaner to engine on diesel models was changed to clear power steering unit.

I didn't know for sure when it was available as there were never to many 400's around here mostly A,C, 140 cultivating tractors. The ones that were here had manual Armstrong steering on them. All the 400's I have seen here with power steering have had the Char Lynn kits on them. MY 57, 450 does have factory power on it. That is what I like about this forum. There is alway's something to learn.

Didn't know if any of them had it from factory or not. I sure never seen a MTA with it on it. Of course 3 or 4 MTA's is all I have ever been around much and they didn't have it on them. I have seen a couple of MTA's with the Behlen unit mounted at the steering post. Was this original?
