Has anybody attempted to install and time engine balancer? I&T says #1 at TDC, but not timing mark there. Any help appreciated.

Ok, going to head to the barn and put #2 at TDC and see what we have. I greatly appreciate all the input. I'll let you know how it works out....

To time a balancer to I.H. Ford, Perkins, or Leyland. # 1 and #4 pistons at TDC or BDC, balancer wieghts lie flat up and on the same plane, fit balancer. The balancer is driven at double speed of crank, so it can be timed with the pistons at TDC or BDC. Balancer gears must be timed together so the weights can lie flat together. Most have timing marks on them though so you can just use them.

Some IH tractors like the 666 do time with number one at TDC, but all 74/84/85/95 series time with the number 2 at TDC for the balancer. I do know that because I have put them in before. THe book says when installing the balancer, first rotate crankshaft position number two piston at TDC of compression stroke. This is the proper way of doing it, for I have put in new balncers on several 74/84/85/ series tractors and they are all the same.

Thats right, putting #2 at TDC leves #1 at bdc, as I said, tdc or bdc don"t matter as the balancer is driven at 2 X crank speed. The reason for using #2 at tdc is because this brings the crank gear timing mark to the bottom so you can see it with the timing cover in place, you can"t with #1 at tdc. If you time with #2 at tdc, fit the balancer, then turn the engine so #1 is at tdc you will find that the balancer will come back to its original position because it is driven at 2 X engine speed.

Here's the procedure from my IH engine manual. First the weight gear that drives off the crank has two teeth seperated by seven teeth with single dots on them. The other gear weight has two teeth side by side with a dot on each. You alighn one of the teeth on drive gear between the double dots on driven gear. You have one of the single marked teeth on top to mesh between the two marked teeth on the crankshaft gear and the other marked tooth will mesh with driven gear between two marked teeth. You then turn engine too NO.2 piston to top dead center. The balancer marked tooth should mesh between the two marked teeth on the crankshaft gear. Then the book says to turn engine over by hand to make sure no parts hit the balancer and it is installed correctally. Hope this helps.

I think George is right. It's been almost five years since I've installed one of those, but #2 on TDC sounds right.

I argued with Dad for two years over this. He installed a new balancer on his 584 and it would start and run, but knocked like crazy. He ask me if I new what was wrong with it, and I ask which piston he had timed it off of and he said the one he was suppose to number one. I informed him that was wrong and it needed to off the number two and told me I was crazy. It still sits in his barn out of time. It has been this way for 10 years. Just waisting away. I have tried to buy it from him, but he won't part with it as it was the first brand new tractor he ever bought.

I think that balancer times off the number two piston instead of one.
