Hey guys, Im replacing the head gasket on my Farmall 450. After removing the valve cover, can I just unbolt the head and pull the unit off, or do I have to disassemble the rocker arm shaft, valve springs, etc. I dont want to disassemble more than I have to. Thanks

Remove the bolts that hold the head to the block and lift it off. Nothing else needs to be removed, although it will be easier to reassemble if you do remove the rocker arm shaft first. You also want to pull the pushrods out. The valve clearance will need to be re-set when you replace the head gasket. That head is heavy, get some help, or use a cherry picker. One man can carry it once it is off, but getting it up off the studs can be a bit of a chore for just one man.

How I adjust the valves? Do I need to find this measurement before I take the head off, or do I just make the adjustment when I put it back on?

From your question, I believe you are new to this. I applaud your willingness to dive in. All of us need the manual. We have (collectively) almost all of it down, but at the risk of making mistakes we look at the book often. This site has manuals, and they are on Ebay as well. Binder Books has repo manuals, and CaseIH has new ones. Please do not take offense, but the repair manual is required in this case. That head will not come off easily, do not chisel between the surfaces to get it off. Some have had to be pulled with a plate made to push down on the stud tops while pulling on the rocker mount bolt holes (more than one of them) No measurements need to be made before removal, as they would be inacurateand worthless.
Good luck, keep things clean, take photos often during removal, and place bolts and pushrods in cardboard holes to keep them in locational order to put back where they came out. JimN

Jim, thank you for providing the details. I was in a bit of a hurry when I replied earlier. Everything you just said went through my head, I just didn't take the time to say it.
