How often should a 504 (or any tractor) be started, and how long should it run, to avoid problems; stuck motors, dead batteries, clogged carbs? How long can they safely set idle before you should worry about prepping them for storrage?

I have a 41 H I hadn't started in 12-24 months, don't remember. Had the fuel shut off, put 3-4 gallons of new gas in it. It started in about 5 seconds. Tractor is kept inside, though.

Another good thing to do is shut the gas off when the engine is running. Then let the engine run and burn the fuel out of the carb till it dies. This prevents the formantion of gum and varnish in the carb and fuel lines. Also good idea to add a fuel stabilizer to prevent fuel break down. Use a fogging oil in the fuel tank to prevent rust in the fuel tank.

I addition to Steven's Good advice I will say that a good battery maintainer (pretty cheap) will keep the battery up to par. Getting all the water out of the hydro fluid and trans fluids is critical for storage (rust prevention, and breakage of castings from freezing). I would also recommend changing the coolant every 3 years even if not used a lot. (again rust and scale prevention) JimN

I try to start my tractors and pickup at least every six months. I have done this for four years now without any problems. When I start them I make sure to let them completely warm up, and I don't just let them sit and idle, I move the throttle up and down throughout the ten or fifteen minutes they are run.

If you want to prep for storage for a long, long time - put about three tablespoons of two-cycle oil in each cylinder and spin the engine over with the plugs out a little bit. Another thing that some like to use is the fogger meant for seasonal (boat, jetski, etc) engines.

It never hurts to give the engine a few complete revolutions every once in a while, either.
