Just bought a 1975 IH 574D that splits alot of black oil from the exhaust sometimes. The sticky oil will travel down the exhaust tube and land on the fuel filters, is this engine oil? kind of smells like it when manifold gets hot enough to burn it. I have to run it hard and for a long time before it clears up. Alot of white smoke when engine is cool, some after engine warms up at idle and full throttle. Tractor runs and starts good. I did put a new thermostat, air filter and changed the oil(Rotella 15w40). The tractor has 3500hr not worked hard. Previous owner only used this tractor to putt around and clean drive way in winter for about 5 years (retired tobacco farmer). There is no coolent in the oil. Tractor did not start spitting until after i changed oil. Engine oil is below fill line, not over filled. Does this tractor need work, or should it be work hard to clear out the engine. I have only used this tractor to bale 400 bales, have run elevator to put hay and straw in barn and make some runs down the road about 5 miles. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Pretty normal for a German diesel that has been idled around. The black stuff is not oil, it is unburned fuel, and I"m guessing your smoke is more of a blue-white, also indicating unburned fuel. Start out by working it at full load for several hours, and avoid idling as much as possible. If no improvment, a set of rebuilt injectors may be in order.

You mighy try working it hard and see what happens. With a plow or heavy disk. Something that will keep it working hard for a while. The white smoke usually indicates moisture. It may have some condensation in the engine from light use.
