Did I get skinned?

The hydraulic cylinder on my old H that raises and lowers my belly mower has leaked bad since I have had it. When I would lower the deck it would shoot a stream of oil out the size of your finger for about 3 seconds. Took it to a machine shop that I know does good work cause I have used them before. When they called and said it was ready they said I owed $361. Way more than I expected but then I have never had one rebuild before. They made a new ram and showed me the old one and it was mighty rough. He also showed me a ram they where making for a car crusher that he said would run around $20,000. What do you think, did I pay too much. It seems to work well and no leaks.

Paul: Yes, I think you did. You probably could have bought a new light implement cylinder for little over $100. Doesn't take much to lift a Woods mower. Your main problem, the cylinder you have is overkill.

You could have gotten a new cylinder cheaper for sure BUT it would not have the mechanical stops that are on the old Power-Trol cylinder and you would have to rig up something to control cutting hieght.

You took the cylinder in and said "fix it" and that is what they did. You didn't ask about replacing it or what it would cost either way. The shop had no responsibility to try to talk you into buying a new cylinder, or a cheaper alternative.

As you get farther into this hobby, you will learn to ask a lot of questions before you make a move (I know, I have learned the hard way also).

From what I know about machinist prices, it is about right for what they did.

A little research can save a lot in the future.

Lesson learned.

Dan

Price for the work about right- as others noted new replacement probably cheaper but you told the shop to fix it- they did, and sounds like the machinist did a good job. Pay the shop for the work and next time maybe be specific. Might get a break next time if you whimper a bit. RN

Yikes Paul.
Sound like you guys had a miss understanding about what you wanted.
I always start my conversations with those guys like.
" hey whats the cheapest way for me to get this cylinder working on my mower?"
Any time I have walked into a place and said I need you to fix this. I get the fixin all right.

Incedently I have gotten both the cylinders redone on my H's loader for $125 total.
But then again I have paid $350 for a stupid mounting bracket that I could have just welded a steel plate on instead. by asking I need you to fix this.

Paul.

Do you have some detail photographs of this belly mower hookup. It is very interesting to me and I might just to it.

I am like the others on here and feel that the end results is a little pricey...however, I am not surprised at the cost of the new ram and new packing. To make this will take a good lathe man a good day or more to fabricate it.

Hi Tom, Here are a few more photos of the old H and the mower. If these don't show what you need let me know and I'll snap you some more.

paul, if the shop built you a new ram, the price is in the ballpark for their work. granted, you probably could have purchased another cylinder cheaper. i had 3 cylinders rebuilt for the loader on my m. have somewhere in the area of 550.00 in the cylinders. problem was i could not get cylinders to match the ones that were on it. would have been a bunch of fabrication to switch to another cylinder type, so i bit the bullet and had em rebuilt. (the loader was an american road equipment loader). the problem with old equipment, when something breaks and its no longer available...its....on to the machine shop! or junk the unit.

like the others said you got 'cylinder' shafted on this one. you should have sold that old john deere 8" cylinder on ebay and bought a brand new one with the money that a deere lover would have paid for it. i have found that john deere people are allergic to money. they can't wait to spend it.

No I didn't.{Auuuugh!} I thought a new one shouldn't be much more than $100 so what could it cost to fix this old one. They guy at the shop said I'm sorry I didn't call you but JD guys come in here all the time wanting their stuff fixed to keep things origonal. Well this is on a farmall. He assumed and I didn't ask. Guess it's a very costly lesson on my part.

I recently did that on an automobile and paid the price. I think I am a lot older (67) than you and I relearned the hard way.

Yeah, Northern Tool, or Farm and Fleet, or even a speciality hydraulic place could have sold you a new cylinder for under $100.

I'm surprised they never mentioned price. I would've checked with Northern Tool formerly Northern Hydraulics since they a have a lot of hydraulic cylinders and they stand back of their
products. Hal

I think (if they want to keep your business) that they should adjust the charges to about one half. I would make sure that (in the future) the company is interactively in your best interest. No way that cylinder is worth that. an old lift all cylinder would do it for 20$. Discuss it with them. JimN

Paul, you can almost always buy a new cylinder cheaper than fixing old ones.

Yep I'd say they got you on that one, unless you just plan wanted to keep it as it was and factory set up. You can buy new cylinders for a whole lot less then that. I know the last one I got new cost me $70 and it was a 8 inch stroke and could be used as a single or double acting cylinder.

Yep, you got skinned. A suitable replacement could have been found for $100 or less.

Poor machine shop - they should have told you the cost before doing the work... at least that's what I expect from any place I do business.

Looks like a single acting 2" x 6" with clevises on both ends. I'm guessing that Surplus Center in NE has them for less than $25. Roberts Electric in Chicago is another surplus outlet.

Not sure why you need what appears to be a crosshead.

the cylinder in the picture does look like a remote cyl.off of a john deere.used in working condition they will cost you in exces of $50. i would have my doubts that it is a 2X8 cylinder.never saw anything like the JD cylinder go for $25 bucks.

The cheapest cylinder in the Surplus Center catalog is $29.95 but the stroke is only 4.5". There are several in the 6" to 8" stroke range that are priced between $40 and $50.

I can think of half a dozen places within 25 miles of Boston, MA where cheap cylinders are available. Everything is negotiable and good deals can be had.

Most hydraulic cylinders are a commodity item. The machine shop knows this and should have suggested replacement rather than repair. They are like TV sets. Does anyone repair TVs anymore? No, because it is not economic. I would have walked if presented that bill. The machine shop will think twice about over selling the customer again.

As far as having the cylinder in the photo redone, I don't know. I suppose the cost would depend on how much work was done. It looks a like the remote cylinders that came with the John Deere A and B tractors. All that being said, a suitable new cylinder would have been around $80.00 at most farm supply stores.

well yea seems high to me but i guess time you tie up a man and a machine to cut and polish shaft material i would say it would add up pretty darn quick some times you can buy new stuff cheaper than rebuilding

just my two cents worth

So, I don't feel you got skinned; you got educated.
