Can anyone tell me how to put a tachometer on my '47 MD. I don't think that it is running at full throttle and want to know of different ways to mount one on the diesel engine. Thanks
Brad

Brad - The alternator spins at a fixed ratio relative to the crankshaft. Probably the easiest way to determine the drive ratio is to manually turn the crankshaft EXACTLY 1 full turn while counting the number and fraction of full turns by the alternator pulley.

And the Delco alternator I believe is a 14 pole unit.
The instructions with the tach will then detail how to take drive ratio and number of alternator poles and us this info to correctly calibrate the tach.

Get a hand held tach on put it on the pto and set it a little over 540 rpm.

Brad - If you can find one, a tach and drive assembly from a later model Farmall with the "start on gas" diesel (eg. 450D or W450) could be adapted.

If you are clever with electronics you could take an electronic car tach and use the breaker points inside the MD mag or distributor for the RPM signal. This would require a bit of engineering however - it would not be a simple "attach the signal wire here" hookup.

Or if you MD has had the generator replaced with an alternator, a "universal diesel electronic tach" would be easy to install. Isspro, Datcon and others make 'em....

I do have an alternator installed on it now. How hard is it to install one of the universal diesel tachs? Not really good with wiring and does it give fairly well described instructions. What would something like that cost? Thanks

Brad - Wiring a diesel alternator tach is straightforward - only 2 wires and a ground are required. However depending upon the alternator you may need to go inside the alteraternato to obtain the pulse signal - but this is not difficult either.

Punch below for a look at an Isspro diesel tach - about $125...

I have a GM alternator. What I don't understand is how the rpm is calculated from the alternator. Will I have to figure out a ratio between the two pullys or is that done internally somehow. If I go this route will you be able to help me some if needed. Thanks
