Farmall B - oil filters

I am good on the oil, me thinks, and I kinda like dropping the pan as long as I am not going to destroy a gasket that cannot be purchased anywhere in the free world. This oil bugs me...black oil I understand but what is up with gray oil? Anyhow, a quick question on filters. This tractor is #FAB 125072 (from the engine block since the Monroe seat displaced the tag) and should therefore be from 1945 if I read my books right. Never trusting that some mechanically savvy farmboy didn't swap a part in a pinch (seen 'em do it, it is an amazing thing!) I went out and took a first hand look at my filter. It looks more like the filter that goes on the older Farmall B's even though it should not be. I was wondering if there was an easy way to tell from possibly the height or diameter of the filter. It is a mess so looking for a part number is going to be hard. Anybody with a B who might know? Also, who sells these? Would TSC have it or do I need to mail order one? FYI she made me work to start her this afternoon!

I get my filters from my Cash/IH dealer. About $10 or so. They have the gaskets also, don't remember the price. I use Quaker State 10W30 oil year round by the way. Their should be an O ring type gasket that seals the oil filter canister to the mounting flange. The tricky part is to remember to take/dig the old O ring out as they are often hard to see. Dave.

I used RTV on the GM oil pan since the factory had used it and it never leaked. It was a little difficult to remove it since it was stuck very well. You don't have align any gasket holes either. Hal

Our local tsc carries all the old Farmall filters [fram]. wouldn't worry to much about gray oil yet, clean out that pan and possibly the valve cover, run it. I've seen gray slime in the crankcase before resulting from condensation. A lot of these old gals get run for short periods of time never reaching operating temperature causing a buildup of condensation. If the gray oil persists, start looking for the source.

As you found in the book, there were 2 different oil filters on these tractors. The diameter is the same. The later one fits in a case that is only about 5 or 5 1/2 inches tall. When installed, the top comes close to the top deck of the block. The earlier one is about 2 inches taller. The top of it comes well above the deck of the block. Either element should be readily available from the usual sources.

Dave, call Brad at 1-888-824-0544. He will send you any part you need for that thing. He also knows the part numbers for most Farmall parts. Any part or gasket is available for that thing. Unlike some other makes, Farmall parts are easily found at IH dealers who are willing to look for them. Even new gears and things are still available. Like the others have said you have moisture in your oil whether it be from a leak or condensation you have water in there. Might be a head gasket or somthing cracked. May even just be a loose head. Could also be a bad sealing ring on a sleeve seaping a little. Try to retorque the head and see if it stops any leak there.

Gray oil sounds like it has moisture in it.

The pan gasket should available at a Case/IH dealer or most aftermarket tractor parts places. NAPA could get it for you (I've bought complete gasket sets from NAPA) or you might be able to order one right here on this site. TSC might too, I don't know because I don't get many parts from them.

Don't crank too hard on those pan bolts when you put them back in, especially the ones in the front and rear of the pan. You don't want to pull the threads out of the holes.

Dave, the gray is oil and water.

As for your filter, I use the Fleetguards from IH, #LF-618, but you can cross that to any brand you're confident with. It's a canister, about 4" tall, 3" wide. Snozzles are about 1" on the lower end and 1/2" on the top. Just make sure that you get the flat ring rubber gasket to go with it, and to make sure there isn't one left in the slot on the tractor's filter housing before you replace it. (They're notoriously devious and will hide from you, but a quick swipe through the channel with something pointy will tell you whether it's there or not.) Trying to stack two will almost guarantee you a leak, and you don't want to overtorque the hollow retaining bolt that holds it all in place trying to stop the leak.

Don't fret about her challenging you about starting this morning. Mine sasses me about half the time, but always starts. I'm thinking it's a lot like my SuperC, who says "What choke?" Usually start better with none.

And I'd sure like to know what you did to get the full range on your throttle lever back.

Dropping the pan can't hurt. The gaskets are easy enough to come by (cork/rubber) but may or may not be an Case/IH item.

Napa should have your filter. Hal
