To my friends here at YT, I'll be offline tomorrow for the big 7.6 mile move. Phone company pulls the plug here at Cuddy Drive at 8AM EDT. Since I'm not changing phone numbers or phone exchange, my thoughts were it would be a matter pulling the plug at the switching station, and just plug it in another hole. Not so Ma Bell claims, pulling that plug is an all day job, they will just barely get it plugged in the new hole by end of 8 hour shift at 5 PM. Them young technicians probably should be enrolled in a fitness program. Here I am 65 years old, was able to take my drill from shop today plug it in at house to drill a larger hole in SMV emblem. Only took me a min. Oh well, so much for modern technology. Phone may be up and running 5 pm, I'll probably wont be. Damn weather is hot and humid for this moving job.

May the level of organization applied to the "stuff" being moved be more effective than you thought it would. JimN

With the same number it will ring at both houses until you specify the old one to be disconnected. Of course you have to make sure they know what you are talking about. I did the same thing as you -- just moved and wanted phone in my new house on 8/30, disconnect the old one on 8/31, as I was at both locations for those 2 days --- SO they disconnected the old one on 8/30 and didn't get the new one in until 8/31 PM. Satellite TV was supposed to be connected on 8/30 -- of course without a phone and a new street no one had heard of, I didn't get TV until 9/3 -- didn't miss much.

Hugh, I think someone is pulling your leg. A couple of keystrokes on a keyboard will assign your number to any "twisted pair" in the US or Canada. It is now possible to use an Eastport, ME number in San Diego. Of course, things might be different up yonder even though both countries use the same area code and "dial 1" system.

Telephone numbers are now portable and can be like SS# in that they can stay with you for life.

If you want to say that you can't take your phone number with you--just come right out and say so.

Ummm. Hugh, please don't make the inference that I think you and Marge (?) are "twisted". Perhaps slightly wrinkled would be more accurate.

Hope the move goes smooth, I don't envy you. After the last move and getting this house built, I'm never doing it again, this is where I'm gonna get old.
