Yesterday me a my lo boy mowed half the yard and was done for the evening. Well tonight I thought I would mow the other half, after checking the oil and giving the mower a little grease I back it out of the garage with ease. Then I put it in 1st gear and it felt like the brakes were on and wanted to stall the motor. I tried all other gears and nothing even nutural nothing would work except for reverse. So I backed it into the garage and scratched my head. Then I remembered why not ask the pro's so here I am asking for things to check. It's a 1958 model lo boy.

Hope you can help.

Steve

The Cub shifter is different than the larger tractors. The end of the shifter is a sphere (ball), not rectangular like on the larger tractors. So building up the corners with weld does not apply. Whatever the problem, it should be obvious when you pull off the cover and shifter.

I agree with Old below, Pull the shifter out first and use a big screw driver to align the rail slots. If they are tough to move, move the rear wheels a bit to take tension off of the gear. Then look at the tip of the shifter. It will be worn down some Have it welded up at the corners (some pics are in the Search here archives under Farmall shifter repair) then it is filed, or grund down to just fit the slots W/O binding. Most likely it is stuck in back-um-up and the shifter has popped out so if you try to sifht it into other gears it is then in 2 gears and if so yep it will kill the engine because it can't go forward and back ward at the same time. Its time to pull the shifter out and have a look see

If it is in two gears at the same time, it would not move at all. It's a bit strange that it will move in reverse and nothing else and seems locked up in 1st. 1st and reverse use the same sliding gear, so it can't be in those two at the same time. 2nd and 3rd use the same sliding gear, but it is a double gear, one set for 2nd, the other for 3rd. My suggestion is to pull off the transmission cover with the shifter lever as a unit. You should then be able to see the problem. When you put it back on, line up the shifter forks so that all gears are in neutral and make sure the end of the shifter lever goes back in the slot on the forks when you put the top back on. If any parts have to be replaced in the transmission, the tractor has to be split in front of the transmission and the shaft(s) pulled out. It's not difficult, as the transmission is pretty simple, but you will need to be somewhat mechanical and also you will need manuals, appropriate tools, jacks, etc for supporting when you split.

You may be in two gears. Hal
