Still working to get my 310b backhoe to charge. I now have installed a rebuilt generator and a new voltage regulator. I also installed new wires - (1) "F" terminal on generator to "F" terminal on voltage regulator, (2) "A" terminal on generator to "GEN" terminal on voltage regulator, (3) "BAT" terminal on voltage to ammeter. When I turn key on, ammeter shows discharge. When I start the tractor, I get NO charge on the ammeter and with my hamnd held voltage meter I get approx. 12.5 volts. If I ground the "F" terminal to the tractor the ammeter does show charge and I get around 13 volts on my voltage meter. I would appreciate any thoughts on where my problem may be.

Sounds like one of 2 things:

1 - A break in the wire between the generator and regulator "F" terminals, or

2 - The new regulator is bad.

Try grounding the regulator "F" terminal with the engine running. If still no charge you need to replace the wire. Otherwise the problem is the regulator.

Bob, I'll add to this sage advice that the regulator body needs to be grounded perfectly before condiming it. That is the only path for Gen field ground. JimN

Jim - Good point to check the regulator for ground! (I should have mentioned that....)

However - were the regulator base not grounded the reg's cutout relay could not pick up. And thus the generator would not charge even when it's field terminal was grounded. ...Bob

You n the Jim man are tough as nails. I agree cuz the Cutout Relay has BOTH a shunt (lil wires high resistance) and a series (big wire low resistance) winding and if the lil shunt winding isnt grounded she would never pull in allowing a charge as his ammeter seems to indicate happens when he dead grounds the Field i.e BOTH the Genny and Cutout Relay (the VR) must already be grounded. I reckon that leaves a bad regulator (doubt the wire is open) possibly the points (on the field control relay) are stuck or else they need a good non abrasive cleaning to wash off some oil residue maybe??? Only other thing I can think of is a polarity sensitive VR may be problematic maybe it has some suppression diodes or something internally???

You are correct, THe pull in (thin wire) coil in the cutout would need ground! JimN
